CHAPTER 11

When Brigid showed up at Wade’s house, everyone was eager to hear what she had to say. They knew they could trust her to give it to them straight. As she sat down and politely declined a drink, she took out her notebook and pen. “Now,” she said matter-of-factly, “Tell me everything. Even if it doesn’t seem to make a difference, give me whatever details you can remember.”

“Well, when Holly showed up, we noticed Zeus wasn’t in the yard,” Wade explained. “He likes to sleep outside on nice nights, so he was in his dog house when I went to bed.”

“Are you sure he was out there?” Brigid asked.

“I can see him from my bedroom window,” Wade explained. “I look at him every night when I go to bed.”

“Good,” she said. “And what time was that?”

“I’d say somewhere around 10:45,” he said after some thought. “I’d been online for a few hours, but I got tired. I logged off, checked on Zeus, and went to bed.”

“Did either of you see him after that?” Brigid asked his parents.

“No,” Wade’s dad said, and his mom shook her head. “We went to bed, I’d say probably around 10:00.”

“And when did you notice he was missing?” Brigid asked.

“I got here right at 8:30,” Holly added.

“Sometimes Zeus sleeps a little later, so I hadn’t worried about him this morning,” Wade explained. “He usually makes his presence known when he’s ready for breakfast.”

“Jett can be the same way some mornings,” Brigid said with a gentle smile. “I’m going to do everything I can to bring Zeus home to you,” she promised.

“Mom, Dad,” Wade said as he turned to them. “You guys can go. I know you promised Grandma you’d visit her.”

“But you need us right now,” his mom said shaking her head. “What kind of parents would we be if we left when there was a problem?”

“Seriously, I’ll be okay,” Wade insisted. “Holly and Brigid know what they’re doing, and I’m not a little kid anymore. Let’s hope that by the time you come back, he’ll be home again.”

“If you’re sure, Wade,” his dad said hesitantly. “I wouldn’t ordinarily leave, but Grandma really does need us.”

“Linc and I are around if he needs anything,” Brigid reassured them.

“Okay, well I guess we’ll get our bags then,” his mother said. They hugged Wade and told him they loved him before loading up and leaving.

“They’re only going to be gone for two nights,” Wade explained to Brigid after his parents had left. “Grandma needed some help with a few things, so they planned to spend the weekend with her to get it all done.”

“I meant what I said,” Brigid told him. “If you need anything, let us know.”

“I will,” he said with a nod. “But for now, I’m just worried about finding Zeus.”

“Well, if we assume Zeus has been stolen by someone, the first thing we have to do is come up with a list of possible suspects,” Brigid said. “I need you to think about who might have wanted your dog.
