Chapter Nine
Heâd hung up before he remembered to ask if there had been any news about Alex. That guy has gone totally off the rails, he thought as he prepared a sandwich for himself. A sandwich he could do without a lot of trouble. Long as he used lots of mayo and mustard, the generally tasteless processed meats were okay.
Wonder where he is? And is he ever gonna turn himself in? Mark would go easy on him if he made the first move, but this constant on-the-run thing he was doing would not go over well, even with Mark.
He poured himself a glass of sparkling water then sat at the kitchen table ready to devour his sandwich. He looked up as Sam came into the kitchen. âCouldnât sleep?â
âNothing against your very comfortable bed, but my mindâs going a thousand miles an hour.â
âJareem sleeping?â
âLike the proverbial log, Iâm happy to say.â
âCan I fix you a sandwich?â
âNo thanks. We did have something execrable on the plane. Iâm too keyed up to eat, but thank you again. Perhaps some water?â
âSure. Sparkling or regular?â
âRegularâs fine. One doesnât appreciate the wonder of clean, bottled water until youâve tasted what the poor people in Afghanistan have to put up with.â He accepted the bottle John handed him. âSo youâre Native American, John?â
âYes. Dakota Sioux. My mother still lives on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.â
âWhatâs her name?â
âKimimela⦠It means butterfly.â
Sam nodded. âPretty. She chose an Anglican name for you, John.â
âYes, she said, when I was ready to leave the reservation, I should have a name that people didnât stumble over.â John smiled. âMy grandmother called me Kohana. It means swift. She said she never saw a two-year-old run as fast as I did.â
âAnd your father?â
âI never knew him, but my mom told me he was of the tribeâ¦and very handsome.â
Sam smiled. âLike father, like son.â
âThanks, but I hope Iâm a better man than he was. Leaving a young wife and newborn was cruel and, in a way, cowardly.â
âCanât argue with that, but you seem to have come out of it very well.â
John nodded. âMy mother and grandmother set me on the right path. After my father deserted us, my mother and grandmother raised me. They taught me to respect the tribal traditions. I had an uncle who would take me on tracking and hunting expeditions. As a kid I thought it was all a game, and fun, but itâs a time Iâve never forgotten.â
âI bet. A lot of kids would love that kind of upbringing. Did school get in the way?â
âNot really. There were still the weekends and the holidays. In high school I won a scholarship to SDU.â
âWhat did you major in?â
âMarine biology, but Iâm afraid the urge to do something more exciting lured me to Hollywood, working as an extra in movies. I had visions of one day being the next Michael Greyeyes. Then I met Mark and my life changed againâ¦for the better.â
âHow did you two meet?â Sam asked.
John chuckled. âNot in the traditional way, thatâs for sure.
