Chapter 18

I sit in the quiet house, the mounting darkness reflecting the current state of my heart and soul. I tighten my hold around my mid-section to keep my insides from crumbling. I’m all cried out and numbness has taken over my body. After Fenix left, I asked for some time alone, but after each hour passes and Cillian doesn’t arrive, I force myself to face the inevitable. He may not come at all.

And I need to tell Dax and Shep the truth about my biological father. If they can’t help, I’m hoping they’ll allow me to contact Ryder. Even though I eliminated the demon bachelor, I’m sure he’ll help.

I glance up at the blinking red light of the small camera perched on the bookshelf and cringe. I wonder how much of my post-Fenix-departure meltdown they’ll include in the final cut.

From my periphery, a bright light catches my eye. I swing my head toward the windows that face the front of the house, expecting to see mom or Becky Sue pulling into the driveway.

Instead, a luminescent pair of wings light up the dark porch. I suck in a breath and leap up, barreling through the front door. Cillian stands on the steps in all his heavenly glory. His lustrous blonde hair rings his head like a halo, his brilliant blue eyes shining like two beacons in the night. A sheepish smile curls his full lips, and for a moment all else fails to exist. Soothing tendrils of power reach for me and embrace me in their gentle caress.

I lunge into Cillian’s arms, and he presses me against his firm chest.

“I’m so sorry, angel,” he whispers as he runs his hand through my hair. “As soon as I returned to Turrim and heard about your father, I came as quickly as I could.”

My throat tightens, thick emotion clogging my airways. “Where were you, Cillian? You weren’t here when I needed you the most.”

“And I’ll never forgive myself for that, Kimmie-Jayne.” He kisses my forehead and glances down at me. The intense emotions swirling in his clear irises disclose everything without him needing to speak. “I was sent on an urgent mission. It was a top priority to Amanadiel, and I was completely cut off from all communications. He knew I would’ve dropped everything to come to you.”

“What was it?”

“The Gargoyle Council—actually Logan requested my presence specifically. They’d received intel that the President was in danger.”

The silver-haired gargoyle bachelor fills my vision. “You mean the now-dead President?”

He nods, his jaw clenched. “By the time I reached him, I was too late. But I remained for another day to keep an eye on the new Vice President. According to Logan, they believe something sinister is at play. He sends his regards by the way. He wanted you to know he’s been keeping an eye out for you. He admitted he was the one that alerted Amanadiel about the rumblings in the Underworld.”

The sweet gargoyle guardian had kept his word to protect me. “Please thank him for me.
