Stonehenge, and stone monuments like it around Britain, have been indefinably linked in the minds of the people of Britain with the "druids" since the writings of the 18th century archaeologist William Stukeley. Stukeley, however, did not act alone; around Britain, upper class (often Anglican) Britons were at this time seeking to understand the ancient "Celtic" religions of their islands. For many, the druids held a great attraction, and the people began to form Druidic Orders around the writings of scholars like Stukeley and Iolo Morganwg (1747-1826). Morganwg, a Welsh nationalist, claimed to have found documents detailing druidic rituals, and even though it is now known that he faked the original documents, his ceremonials have made a deep impact upon the modern Druidic Movement. A variation of his ritual is still performed yearly at Stonehenge.
