Chapter Thirteen

Jayne listened to the solemn opening tones of the song playing on Seth’s CD player in his workroom. The melodious voice of the cello, over the deeper notes of another cello, acted as the vocal part of the song, forming a bridge as the deeper chords came to the forefront again.

“What’s the name of this song?” She knew it was Apocalyptica but wanted to know the title so she could download it later for use while she wrote. If it turned her on while she got a tattoo, chances were it would be great for writing erotica too.

Seth wiped at her skin with the soft cloth before continuing on with the tattoo. He was working on the shading in and around the roses. He glanced up at her before his eyes stroked across her body in an almost palpable caress.

“It’s called ‘Farewell.’ Did you decide what color you want me to use on the roses?”

She shook her head. “No. To be honest, I really like them the way they are. The shading is so soft and…they look beautiful as is. I also…”

“What?” he asked, his eyes never leaving his work but his voice communicating his interest.

Jayne licked her lip. “I like the contrast between our tattoos. Both are monochromatic, but that’s where the similarity ends. In the mirror, earlier this morning, with you…behind me, with your darker tattoos against mine.” She let out a shaky sigh. He’d snuck up behind her in the bathroom and laid the sketches he’d drawn at some point during the night on the bathroom counter while she’d been brushing her hair. She’d been so overwhelmed by his gift, and her need for him, that they hadn’t even made it back to the bed.

He glanced up at her briefly, but she saw the hunger in his eyes. “I liked it too.”

He’d taken her from behind for the first time against the bathroom vanity. She found the contrast between his dark, masculine ink and her more delicate designs very appealing. She’d felt like she belonged to him. He hadn’t made any permanent commitments to her, and she didn’t want him to feel like she was expecting that, so she said nothing more.

Then at the tattoo studio, she’d taken him up on his dare and stripped nude for the tattoo. She felt particularly wanton, both from his gaze and the touch of his hands, but also the sensual chords of the music playing. She let her imagination run free. Back and forth, the vocal melody of the higher notes interchanged with the deeper, more masculine notes of the other cello, as though the two were having a conversation, or negotiating.

She turned the volume up a notch higher and let out a slow breath. A wave of gooseflesh rippled over her abdomen, and she breathed through the intense throb as he continued his work. Submitting to this tattoo was one of the most painful things she’d ever done, but she found it bearable after the first minute or two, and if pressed to admit it, one of the hottest things she’d ever done.
