Chapter Eight

KISSING CONNELL WAS the best- not the smartest- possibly the worst timed ever, idea Quiellim had ever had. Sure, it was five years overdue, but this wasn’t the time for his body to act independently of his mind. Not that Quiellim could hear any complaints coming from his lust-addled mind either. If anything, it was demanding they do it again, take it further and if it weren’t for the dhampyres chasing them through the tunnels, Quiellim would have. But then he blamed the whole mess that he’d just created on the dhampyres. It had to be a fear-induced reaction that had caused the restraints on his feelings for Connell to be set free.

Not smart at all, but Quiellim didn’t regret it. Couldn’t bring himself to when—if he was completely honest with himself—he’d wanted to do it for so long. Wanted more too, beyond a physical intimacy and that meant explaining to Connell just how important he was too him. An importance he doubted the human would be able to comprehend. The romanticism of fiction, the fantasy one liked to imagine, not always so easily accepted when it is shown to be real. It was better to not say anything at all. Better to live with the what if’s instead of learning it was a not ever.

And yet a glimmer of hope, of just maybe...just maybe Connell wouldn’t laugh and toss his forever’s aside shone bright through the darkness of Quiellim’s assumptions as Connell grabbed his arm and begged him not to shift back into wolf form. A touch that burned through the fabric of his clothing and had Quiellim ready to say, “fuck the danger,” and push Connell back against the wall; kiss him until they were panting useless messes of hormones and clothes were more annoying than the dhampyres hunting them...

Quiellim sucked in a shaky breath as reason took charge in his brain again. It wouldn’t be wise to forget that they were being hunted. He shook off Connell’s tight grasp, uttering assurances that he wouldn’t shift while trying to quell the inferno raging in his body. Needed to quieten the clamour of excited voices in his head that wanted him to claim Connell right here, right now as his. Mark him so that all who stared at Connell’s neck knew the man belonged to him. But that still required Quiellim to explain aspects of wolf society that the man still didn’t know: like the significance of a claiming bite. Again, not a conversation he wanted to have here. Didn’t need to deal with Connell being afraid of him as he was the dhampyres hunting them or to waste time explaining that a bite wouldn’t turn him into a wolf. Quiellim was a shifter and nothing like the werewolf fantasies written about in the books on Connell’s book shelves. The only ones able to turn their partners were those of the vampire species.

And it was a conversation he wanted to put off for as long as possible.
