Chapter Seven

Cormac hated getting back to work without Finn. Unfortunately, he worried Rian might balk if he kept sticking to Finn’s side nonstop. Even though Cormac had money, since Rian paid extremely well and Cormac had no overhead costs, Cormac couldn’t lose this job. He didn’t know how to do anything else. Plus, Finn was here. This was his family. Cormac had to pull his weight. He spent two hours standing guard outside Rian’s office before Kylian showed up to hang out with Rian.

“What are you doing?”

Rian finally looked away from his computer at Kylian’s outraged tone. His gaze moved Cormac’s way. “That’s a good question. I thought it was Cinaed standing there.”

Cormac shrugged. “He was. I gave him a break.”

Rian and Kylian stared at him like he had lost his mind.

Cormac looked between them.

Rian snapped. “Why are you still standing here? Get back to bed.”

With a sigh, Cormac walked away. While he still didn’t feel great, he knew it would be awhile before that changed. Losing organs turned out to be no joke. But Finn was mostly out of his chair, scooting around with his walker. Even though there was nothing he would rather do than hang in bed with Finn all day, he worried Finn might not get the exercise he needed with Cormac there. He couldn’t stop waiting on him.

Still, Cormac couldn’t help but pick up the pace as he neared their rooms. He expected Finn would be exactly where he left him, hanging out in his pjs and watching TV. Finn was nowhere to be seen. Cormac checked the bedroom and the bathroom before heading to his room to find out if Alastair knew anything. Alastair wasn’t there either. He went to the main kitchen to see if they had ventured out for food. Still no signs. Cormac searched the place from top to bottom. Panic tried setting in. Logically, he knew Finn was a grown man and could go where he wanted. Still, Cormac’s anxiety couldn’t handle not being able to find him after almost losing him. Before he had a full-blown meltdown, familiar-sounding laughter floated down the hall. Cormac followed it. Alastair pushed Finn in his wheelchair. It was obvious they were coming home from somewhere. Finn was fully dressed, which he still couldn’t do alone. That had Cormac losing sight in one eye, but he sounded calm when he spoke. He thought it was a major feat, since Finn held a bouquet of roses.

“I’ve been looking for you.”

Finn’s cheeks were flushed. He looked happier than Cormac had seen in a while. “Alastair busted me out of here for a bit. It was nice to get out of the house.” He held the roses out to Cormac. “Oh. These are for you. I’d planned to surprise you, but you’re not working. Why aren’t you working?”

Cormac felt like shit for his irritation. Of course, Finn would want to get out after being cooped up for so long. He motioned with the flowers down the hall. “Rian wouldn’t let me work.
