CHAPTER TEN

NOVA

Crying was my thing. I did it a lot. James, being a witness to many of my breakdowns, but never like this. Not because of him. Usually, I waited until I was alone in the shower and the water could mask the sounds of my pitiful sobbing. This time, he not only caused it, but he also did it in spectacular fashion.

Those sweet, unbelievably sweet words crushed me and put me back together all at the same time. His incredible insight into my emotions surprised me so much I burst into tears right in front of him.

James thought those were things he didn’t understand about me, but he was so wrong. He understood me enough to think that is how I see myself. If anyone knew me, it was James. My sisters knew the Nova who was the big sister, the stand-in mum. They knew how I ticked, but only James had picked up that I didn’t see myself as important, just the things I did for others. My sisters didn’t see that I was feeling guilty that I wasn’t providing for the family the way our father would have if he was still alive. James got I pushed myself to succeed to prove to myself I could take on the responsibility of my family and not fail.

Failure was not an option. My sisters were safe from the courts now, but somewhere deep inside me, I feared it could all be taken away in the blink of an eye, any time. My mum, my dad, my grandfather—they all died, and everything went away. My aunts and uncles took away my grandmother then virtually disappeared from our lives without any kind of explanation. Christmas and birthday cards dwindled until we stopped getting them altogether. The last time I saw one of my relatives had been three years ago when a cousin came into the pub and asked if I did wedding receptions. Of course, I answered yes; receptions brought in new clientele and big money. Then she asked for a family discount, as in, she wanted to pay nothing. I sent her on her way with a clear message to the family to stay out of my pub and my life. Just another person who wanted to take but fuck giving me in return.

James gave and gave then gave some more, and I fought him all the way. That shamed me, here I was complaining about people taking from me without remorse, and I was doing the same to James. Taking from him, but not showing him the proper appreciation. I was so hellbent on making it on my own, my actions only insulting towards James.

Well, that stops right here and now.

Swiping my cheeks on my top at my shoulders, I gained some control, enough so I could speak.

“I watch that movie over and over because it is about three daughters and their love for their mum. In the movie, the daughters are batshit crazy in their own way, just like Chevy, Shelby and me.
