This switchbacking descent will rattle your knees until it bottoms out in a wash at 5 miles (8 km). Although the hard downhill work is over, you now face a long stretch of walking through soft sand. The rocky canyon walls and general loveliness of this mid-elevation desert wilderness is enough compensation for the hard work, and after several twists and turns through heavily fractured granite corridors, the trail leaves the wash for good at 6.3 miles (10.1 km).

The remaining 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to the Boy Scout Trailhead traverse open middle-elevation desert dominated by creosote, pencil cholla, jojoba, and abundant wildflowers during March and early April. The northern ramparts of the Wonderland of Rocks melt into Indian Cove’s sheltered basin to the south, providing one last burst of granitic splendor before you reach your car.
