Twelve – Maple

Her friends were late. They were always late. She might be the only artist she’d ever met who was chronically early. Normally she would have gone into the gallery without them, started her process of standing silently in front of each piece of work. First she liked to look. To look and try not to feel or think anything at all.

When a thought or feeling became too strong to ignore, she’d investigate it. Try to understand what it was about the piece that evoked emotion for her.

That’s the way she’d been enjoying Tali recently. And holy shit did she ever enjoy Tali.

The dynamic between them had shifted ever since the visit to her studio. Maple was still flirting too much, Tali was still an eighty year-old grump in a thirty-something’s body. But there was more now. Tali’s texts—so many texts—hinted at personal facts more than not. And there was the occasional ‘lol’ or ‘haha’ to the ceaseless wave of Maple’s jokes.

Before there had always come a point in the texting conversation when Tali would start to respond slower, and inevitably send something like ‘we’re colleagues and I’m no fun, we have to stop talking about anything not related to the project.’ Well, not that message exactly, but that was the gist of it.

Now that never came. And Tali was often the one to initiate over these last few weeks.

There’d been a Jewish holiday Maple had never celebrated before, Shavuot. Maple admitted she wasn’t sure what it was. Tali admitted she’d never known what it was until rabbinic school. Maple asked a lot of questions about why it involved cheese. There’d been a few hours of delay before she heard back from Tali around midnight. She was still up, studying with the teens.
