CHAPTER TWELVE

Janet sat on the bench within the back of the truck, feeling alone, although there were three other men around her and another two up front. The vehicle rumbled and shook as it moved down the streets toward the general hospital in the city’s southwestern district.

The men guarding her refused to tell her exactly what was happening. All they’d given was a vague promise that she would get to see Dr. Costa and Dr. Gurung again and that they would fill her in on the details when they arrived.

She knew—knew—something was wrong. That there had been a new development and not a good one. The already dangerous and chaotic situation had worsened, and they moved her to keep her protected from the growing threat. It was the only explanation that made any sense.

One of the guards, a British man named Jim Pelham, looked up at her and caught her eye. “Are you doing well, Miss Feng? We should arrive in about five minutes.” He was generally the most polite of the security detail. The others weren’t rude, but they weren’t very sociable, either.

She inclined her head gently toward him so her bobbed hair swayed a little in that direction. “Yes, thank you. I would like to know what has happened, though.”

Pelham grimaced, but not without empathy. “I’m afraid they haven’t told us all the details either. Only that we’re all to relocate to Atlantica General for security reasons and that Executioner Gurung will fill us in on the rest.”

Janet nodded again. It was odd to hear Gage Gurung, the kind and mild-mannered little man whom she’d spent weeks looking after during his convalescence, referred to now as an Executioner. Someone engaged in grim and bloody business, with authority over other armed and dangerous men.

Still, all this was happening for the sake of her safety. She looked forward to seeing Dante again.

The ride was supposedly almost over, but she wished there was a window to look out, rather than having to stare at the armored truck’s metal walls and floor. Atlantica City was beautiful at night with its streetlamps and tall buildings glistening in the moonlight and starlight, at least on clear evenings. Even when cloudy as it often was, the dazzling display of modern progress had a certain grandeur to it.

Her parents had, by their accounts, come from a small village deep in the hills in Shanxi Province. She’d grown up on the outskirts of San Francisco and had always enjoyed visiting the city despite the hassles involved.

From the front seat, Senior Officer MacLeod, a doughty old Scotsman who ran most of the Executioners’ auxiliary security operations, barked, “We’re three minutes from site. Hospital staff say all is well so far. We’re to meet Gurung and Costa in the emergency room lobby.”

Nods went around the truck’s rear compartment. Everyone was on edge and looked forward to having an actual building to sequester themselves.

They’d all heard about the shootout at the Temple of Aphrodite. The details hadn’t yet unveiled themselves, but the general perception was that it had been a bloodbath.
