Officer Banks called Cassidy and told her he’d been able to locate the Ballards—the couple who’d double-booked at the house beside the governor. Cassidy said she wanted to talk to them herself, and Ty volunteered to go with her.

He’d feel better if someone had her back, especially considering everything going on lately.

It wasn’t only that worrying Ty, however.

He’d noticed a vague emptiness in Cassidy lately, and he knew that it was wearing on her that they may never be able to have kids of their own.

He wished that he could take away some of the hurt, that he could change things. But some things were just in God’s hands, and they had to trust that all the details would work out despite any heartache they felt.

Plus, Ty wasn’t giving up hope yet.

He hoped Cassidy’s tests would come back positive and that the doctor could offer some kind of solution.

“What do you know about these people?” Ty asked as they headed down the road, Cassidy behind the wheel.

“Apparently, Ed and Sandra are in their thirties. They don’t have any kids. They came here from upstate New York, and they both love kiteboarding.”

“So where have they been the past couple of days as you guys have been trying to get in touch with them?”

Cassidy’s jaw tightened. “That’s one of the first questions I plan on asking them.”

Ty settled back in his seat as they continued down the road.

Did this couple have anything to do with what was going on?

Ty knew that Cassidy was smart to check them out.

In his days as a Navy SEAL, he’d tracked down some of the world’s most hardened criminals. He’s been on the front lines of danger more times than he could count.

But nothing felt scarier than having a loved one in danger.

Sometimes, that made Lantern Beach feel entirely more dangerous than the Middle East had.

Cassidy was good at her job. She was well equipped to do what she needed to do. And she was smart.

But as a SEAL, Ty had always worked with a team. There was a reason for that. As the old saying went, there truly was safety in numbers.

That’s why Ty was glad he could go with Cassidy now. He trusted that Janie was in good hands with his guys. Besides, as much as he hadn’t minded keeping an eye on her, it felt good to get out and do some hands-on work himself.

They pulled up to an oceanfront house probably five blocks from where the governor was currently staying.

After parking the car, Ty followed Cassidy toward the front door. Another car had been parked in the driveway—a car with New York plates—so it looked like this couple should be home.

Cassidy strode up the steps to the front door and rang the bell. As she did, Ty remained behind her, a quiet but protective presence.

A moment later, a man opened the door.

And he had a gun in his hand.
