Part Two
Chapter Thirty One
“What's wrong, Rio?” I shuffle beside Valerio on his mama’s sofa and hold him close. “Please tell me. I know something’s happened.”
Valerio ignores me but rests his head on my shoulders. He's just come back from Japan—he was there for a week and has just come home. I know the race was too much for him. He crashed and texted me to say he was worn out from the heat and from partying too hard with his group of friends that tagged along with him.
“He was there.”
I stop breathing and become still. “Oh.” I take a breath and kiss Valerio’s head. “And?”
“And he's gay and I kissed him before I found out. I made a fool of myself being drunk and pawing over him. I upset him, now he hates me.”
I chuckle and kiss him again. “I'm sure he doesn’t hate you, Rio. He likes you.”
“No—”
“For God’s sake, he does and you like him, you always have done.”
“That's when we didn’t know each other and I thought it was all fun and dreams. I kissed him while I was drunk, so drunk, Pup. I couldn’t even remember it until a few days ago, but I knew something had happened and the next night I talked him into coming back with me and we ended up in bed, watching TV, and I wanted more. He got angry when I thought he was straight and then he kissed me and I freaked out.”
I sigh and hug him to me. Jamie Burton has been a big fantasy of his for a long time. At first it hurt then I came to conclusion that it would never happen. Rio hasn't been with another man since me and he has withdrawn into his safe world of hiding what he wants and has been seeing girls. Not many, but enough to stop his sexual desires from spiralling out of control.
Jamie is beautiful, he's funny and Rio considers him to be unreachable, but I've always seen a little glimmer of excitement in Jamie’s eyes when they meet. I've always known he was gay. I saw him all those years ago with his boyfriend, then I read up on his private life on the net. Valerio didn’t know and he didn’t want to know, so I kept it from him. I was selfish in some ways because I knew Jamie and him would be together sexually and I didn’t like that.
Things have become different over the past year. Valerio and I have become friends. We’ve stayed in touch and he has begun to share his feelings with me more and more. He still hasn't talked about his rape and I'm beginning to think he never will and it worries me. Since our last night together, just over a year ago, we haven't had sex. There has been the occasional drunken kiss and loving words between us. We met up and I went down on him and he returned the favour, but that was over eight months ago, and since then there hasn't been anything between us but friendship.
