Three additional issues influence the level of conflict in the workplace: voices, "win/lose," and triangling. Promotions generally aren't given to individuals who create a great deal of conflict, unless an individual is brought in specifically as a change agent. The amount of energy and time taken away from the corporation in conflict is extremely expensive. The ability to avoid - or at least minimize - conflict is crucial to promotion.

To be promoted to mid-management, one must be able to use formal register and the adult voice in conflict, listen to the non-verbals, and avoid triangling. In addition, it's vital for the individual to use the formal discourse pattern.
