THE STARBUCKS MURDER/KENNETH STARR
Mary Mahoney was a twenty-five-year-old former White House intern who was working as an assistant manager at a Starbucks in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Mahoney was said to know Monica Lewinsky, and Lewinsky later told Linda Tripp that she didnât want to end up like Mahoney. On July 6, 1997, Mahoney and two coworkers were killed in what police admitted was an âexecution styleâ slaying. The motive clearly wasnât robbery, as depending upon the reports, anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 was left behind in the store. The evidence indicated two different weapons were used, which would seemingly rule out a lone gunman.
Reporter Michael Isikoff of Newsweek had spoken of a former White House intern with the initial âMâ who was on the verge of talking about an affair with Clinton, and this led to speculation that Mahoney, not Lewinsky, was the person involved. In a related death, police informant Eric Butera, who was investigating the Starbucks murders, was beaten to death in a crack house and his family was awarded nearly $100 million in damages. Carl Derek Cooper initially confessed to the slayings, but his lawyer protested that his confession had been coerced. Newsmax.com reported on January 23, 2000, that Cooper vigorously denied being the killer, declaring, âI swear on my fatherâs grave and my sonâs life that I didnât do Starbucks.â
Author David M. Hoffman, who conducted an investigation of Mahoneyâs murder, told Globe magazine that the Starbucks killings happened only three days after Monica Lewinsksy had informed the president she was going to let her parents know about their relationship. Clinton had supposedly angrily reacted by saying, âItâs a crime to threaten the president.â Hoffman reported new details of Mahoneyâs time as a White House intern and claimed that, although she was an outspoken lesbian (on July 18, 1997, the Washington Blade reported that Mahoney had been a founder of the Baltimore Lesbian Avengers), she had been concerned about all the tales sheâd heard from others regarding Bill Clintonâs sexual advances toward them.
On February 10, 2000, the Washington Post reported that Attorney General Janet Reno, in one of the relatively few times she had opted to do so during her time in office, overruled US Attorney Wilma A. Lewis in opting for the death penalty against Carl Derek Cooper in the Starbucks case. In the article, it was stated that, âTwo law enforcement sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the consensus at the US attorneyâs office was that the Starbucks case did not have such a compelling federal interest that it called for the ultimate sanction of death. . . .â âThe article went on to speculate about what role Eric Holder, then deputy attorney general and future Obama attorney general, might have played in the deliberations. In a story the next day, covering the weekly Justice Department press briefing, Holder acknowledged that his office had been a part of the decision to seek the death penalty, even though Wilma Lewis had recommended against execution, but wouldnât comment on his role in the matter.
