Chapter Eighteen

Pele had come dangerously close to removing that asshole’s spleen, right here in the middle of the club. After that disgusting conversation, nothing would have given him more pleasure. It took every ounce of control to hold on to the virus, which lunged against its imaginary chain. How amazing would it be to let the Morpheus Virus take over all control while Pele used his augmented strength to go medieval on that puaaelo.

Pele performing efficient disemboweling with military precision would attract all the wrong attention.

The desire to hurt that guy continued to simmer.

He scanned the club for the fiftieth time. Friend or enemy? Air in. Friend or enemy? Air out. Clench fists. Unclench fists. Repeat. He kept going until the virus receded into a disgruntled background rumble.

How could anyone say things like that to Reagan? She was a lovely person. Anyone with half a brain could tell.

Her responses to her ex-fiancé didn’t suggest a mutually broken engagement.

He saw the fear and pain. Ti’o. What had that guy done?

He fought another viral wave urging him to find Clayton and beat some respect into him. When had he come this close to losing control? Never. He needed an antidote shot soon. With a massive effort, Pele shook out his fists and checked his watch.

Reagan had been in the restroom for quite a while. Maybe she needed … what? Help? Support? Was she going to pieces in there after what her ex said? Anger had him fantasizing about how he could create some fresh birthmarks on Pretty Boy’s face.

That guy had some balls to disrespect her. When it came to Reagan’s fiancé, o le tau o le maile oe. That man had the value of a dog. Less than a dog.

The club had gotten more crowded in the past half hour. Bodies moved in time to the loud music. The scents of beer, sweat, and perfume combined in the air. Several patrons sauntered up to him, but he shook his head each time.

He only wanted one person.

He paced in front of the ladies’ room, drawing glares and interested glances from the women entering and exiting. Still no Reagan. He’d give her another five minutes, then he was going in after her, and damn anyone’s offense.

Three minutes later, Reagan emerged with her long, curly hair pushed back over her shoulders, chin up, mouth set in a determined line. Her skin glowed. She’d removed every trace of makeup.

The only hint as to her true feelings could be seen in the glitter in her eyes and the quiver in her lower lip.

Ti’o, he wanted so badly to wrap his arms around her, insulate and protect her, and convince her that that jerk was wrong. He wanted to prove that she was beautiful.

But she didn’t need Pele’s help.

She proved the fact of her beauty to herself. As well she should.

“Reagan?”

She lifted a hand. “I’m sorry you got involved in that exchange.” Her level, cold voice scared him. Like she was a tight piece of crystal.

One tap on the glass and she’d shatter.
