Chapter 19

I spend the rest of the afternoon stuck in my office sorting through files and trying to figure out my dad’s filing system and how he kept things stored. He hung on to every single scrap of paper that he ever touched, which meant that I had all the information I needed to jump right in and run the company.

The problem was that it was all so disorganized that I didn’t know where anything was. By the time five o’clock rolled around, the three men came looking for me only to find me on the floor, my shoes kicked off, surrounded by stacks of paper.

Gregory had loyally brought me a cup of tea every hour on the hour and I’m honestly afraid that if I tried to move I’d end up peeing everywhere.

“You’re stuck,” Johnny says with a grin, stepping carefully between stacks of paper to lift me up to my feet. I groan as he does and lean on him, letting him help me out of the piles.

“I’m going to die from all of these paper cuts,” I tell him, holding out my hands. He grabs them and lightly kisses each finger, making me feel a bit lightheaded.

“Are we the last to leave?” I ask. The other offices are quiet and the lights are all off. I didn’t realize that it was getting to be quitting time until just now and my stomach rumbles to let me know how foolish I’d been sitting there on the floor for so long.

“You’re the boss and it’s your first day,” Johnny says with a laugh. “That’s how you make a good impression and keep your people happy. Now drive safe, Jessa, and the three of us will see you at home.”

I kiss them all, their lips warm on mine, then wave as they all drive off. For just a moment, I stand and look at the building, then I get into my car and immediately call Sara.

“Jessa! How was your first day? I was just thinking about you, you know.” She sounds excited and honestly happy for me and just hearing her voice makes me smile.

“It was good,” I say. There’s something weird going on with the security system, but everyone seems really nice.” I tell
