Honzio

Kingdom of Ayleth

“What in the four kingdoms is going on?”

Honzio’s question was met with a blank look from Svorgin. The Savorian pulled himself up from the floor, appearing winded after the door had blasted open and thrown him backward. It had all happened so fast. Natassa snaring his dagger, Svorgin rushing forward to hold the door closed, Honzio grabbing a vase full of flowers he hoped Marcella wouldn’t miss since they currently lay in crushed stems by his boots. The newcomers had burst in and locked the door behind them.

Honzio had held the vase like a weapon and marched forward to protect his sister, but the sight that confronted him had fastened him in place. Natassa had dropped her dagger—his dagger—and threw her arms around one of the newcomers’ necks. She had sobbed. His sister had sobbed for some strange man he had never seen in his life.

Honzio blinked, returning to the present. Natassa kneeled on the floor near the entryway, tears streaming down her cheeks as she held the unconscious man in her arms. Arrows stuck out of his back.

“True Manos? Is there a True Manos?” asked another newcomer, a young boy with panicked eyes and urgency in his tone.

An older man was slumped against the boy, his face lowered and sweat slicking long strands of his graying hair to his face and neck, rendering his features unrecognizable. But his pale skin and blond streaks of hair marked him as Savorian. Honzio sputtered, searching for words, when Marcella stepped out of the kitchen, wiping her hands over a battered apron. Her violet curls stuck up in a frizzy mess.

“Take him up the stairs. First room on the left.”

The boy nodded, placing his shoulder under the Savorian’s, and assisted him up the stairs.

“You two,” Marcella ordered, hands on hips. “Take this young man here.”

Honzio paused, still utterly bewildered, before following Svorgin.

Natassa stared at them, her fingers gripping her skirt and worry in her gaze. “Please, hurry.”

Honzio jumped into action then, grabbing hold of the young man with one arm. Svorgin lifted most of the weight. They staggered up the stairs and into the room Marcella had directed them to. Natassa was one step behind them. Honzio recognized the room from the tour Marcella had given them during their stay. She rented the space to those who needed more privacy than an inn could provide. Thankfully, there weren’t any tenants about. Two beds bordered either side of the room, mirroring each other, covered with homey squares of fabric that had been patched into quilts. A roaring fireplace took up a section of the wall, and a dresser faced the door, devoid of belongings other than the mirror hanging above it.

Sweat trickled down Honzio’s brow and into his beard. His jaw clenched, and a labored breath slipped free as he helped deposit the wounded man onto the free bed. The other had already been taken up by the Savorian, and the young boy hovered over him wearing a panicked expression. Marcella barged inside, carrying hot water, linen, and what looked like metal rods.
