Tasha

We spent the next hour in bed, kissing and caressing, an erotic form of cuddling that makes my skin tingle and my toes curl. They’re so gentle with me while also making me feel like the most desired creature in the universe.

Jared pulls away from a long kiss, his fingertips tracing my thigh, and looks at me curiously. “You and Derek never had any children,” he says, and even though it comes off like an idle observation, I stiffen. “I guess that’s a blessing, considering the kind of person he turned out to be.”

It feels like someone pulled the rug out from under me, and now I’m suspended in mid-air, about to crash to the ground.

“Uh oh, did I say something wrong?” Jared asks, reading my expression.

I close my eyes and try to hold myself together. “I can’t . . . have them,” I say as the emotions roil and churn like hot oil in my gut. “We tried, but . . . the doctors said . . . the tests . . . ”

Cody props himself up on one elbow and caresses my shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Tasha.”

“Shit, I’m sorry too. I didn’t mean . . . ” Jared says.

“It’s okay,” I say. “I know you didn’t mean anything by it. And you’re not the first person to ask.” I try to take a breath, but it jumps into my throat too fast. I gulp it down. “Who would have thought that someone like me—I mean, I’ve always known I wanted a family, ever since I was a little girl—not able to have children?” The tears come then, hot on my cheeks. I wipe them away and shove the emotions back. There’s nothing I can do about it, so there’s no use in crying.

“You’ll have a whole camp full of children,” Cody says. “And they’ll need someone like you,” he adds, his eyes watching me with yearning.

“Some of the kids applying don’t have mothers at all,” Jared says, stroking my hair. “Think what that will be like for them to have you in their life.”

I nod. I know they’re right, and I am excited for this opportunity, but I’ll always be a little bit sad about my “problem.”

“You can adopt Cody,” Jared says, grinning. “He acts like he’s fourteen most of the time.”

I laugh, then turn to Cody and stroke his face. “But then I’d have to stop kissing him.”

“Then that definitely won’t work,” he says, devouring my mouth with another slow, sensual kiss.

“I know something that will make you feel better,” Jared says, and kisses the back of my ear. My core spirals a little tighter as a new rush of desire crashes through my nerve endings.

“What would you say to a little fresh air?” Jared adds, connecting soft kisses down to the base of my neck.

I see Cody’s eyes light up. “We are pretty dirty,” he says.

Suddenly, I realize where they want to take me, and before I know it, Jared has me over his shoulder.

“No!” I cry out.
