The Commons turned out to be something of a diner with servants circling with plates of food and drink. Coria handed me the fizzy drink she’d pointed out earlier in the day, called courmi. It was tart and smoky on my tongue, just a little boozy. Mostly, it tasted like carbs and calories. Delicious, delicious calories.

Not feeling much drunken danger in the brew, I drank deeply and watched the dark elves around me. They were loud and confident-looking, their stances cocky and their voices loud. Their stares were discreet, they were warriors after all, but they watched me with open suspicion. I threw a glance at Alysa who appeared to be weirdly in her element. The pretty shifter drew plenty of stares, too, but mostly the appreciative kind. For all their beauty, the dark elves looked pretty monotone. Alysa sparkled like a blue sapphire in a bucket of onyx. A couple of lordlings were nudging each other with their elbows and pouring more courmi for themselves, I guessed to get enough courage to go up and talk to her. I suppressed a jolt of jealousy. Then, felt stupid for feeling jealous.

Her eyes caught mine and a burst of heat warmed my stomach. Lips parting, she looked ready to say something. Was she feeling things, too? Things that could get us killed in these circumstances?

I smiled at her as if my heart wasn’t doing a backflip in my chest. The memories of her warm body pressing into my back made blood rush into certain parts of my body. Oh crap. I took another sip of courmi and tore my eyes away from her. I did my best to think of the least sexy thing around—the lords that were sizing me up. It helped. Barely.

I had to admit that I felt massively out of place. I wasn’t some beefcake like Tynan, ready to lay down my life for his lords and tribe. He conquered dragons and ice trolls like taking out garbage to the curbside bin. In comparison, I was like a portly innkeeper in a fantasy flick. The man had enviable brawn and a seriously nerdy sense of honor.

Speaking of Tynan. I spotted the tall man at the end of the long table. At first, I thought he was wrangling with some beast, and was briefly confused—did he bring his monster slaying to the party? Then I realized he was slicing a giant roast that still had some of the hair sticking out of it. He wore a big leather apron that stretched across his wide chest and fell past his waist. His glossy black hair was pulled back to reveal his sharp, pointy ears. As ever, he looked like a swimmer had a baby with a wrestler. Except with skin the color of dark gray slate. He ignored the admiring stares from the serving girls and the dismayed looks from the warriors as he worked. I set down my drink.

“What are you doing?” I asked. “I thought you’d be over there with Donnie and Ronnie showing off their prized kills.
