WHEN TO REFER

Refer obese adolescents to psychologically astute physicians or psychiatrists for a complete physical examination at the beginning of counseling treatment. The purpose is to address the presence or absence of physical problems that are beyond the scope of counseling or that might interfere with treatment.

If counselors do not feel qualified to deal with problems of obesity, they should refer clients to their colleagues. If it becomes clear that adolescents’ struggles with obesity signal the generalized problems and conflicts within the family, focused training in child management or more intense family therapy is in order. Consult a competent marriage and family therapist if this is not your area of training and expertise.
