Chapter 13

Hanna had a sense that every word coming out of his mouth was true, or at least Rhune believed it was, but the rational side of her couldn’t fathom what he was talking about. Hellhounds? God? Heaven and Hell? She’d never been religious, and the scant beliefs she did have were her own simple conceived notions of the afterlife. But this? Then how could she explain Rhune showing up in that alleyway? Or in front of her windshield like a ghost as she was driving seventy miles an hour? Better yet, standing inside her apartment when she’d dead-bolted the door from the inside?

The chasm that had threatened to take her down the day before opened up again, only wider this time.

Her vision wavered.

Sweat beaded on her forehead.

Her heart raced.

Then Rhune did it again. He took her hands and sent that voodoo calming spell of his to ease the maelstrom of insanity brewing inside her. “You...?” She attempted to pull free from his grasp, but he refused to let go. It was just as well. She sensed herself falling into that deep, dark hole from which she feared she’d never return.

He gave her a small smile and continued. “After midnight, I transform into a beast that serves God, contrary to popular belief. Hellhounds ensure that the souls going to Hell are delivered. I made this sacrament to right the wrongs I’d committed in my past life. Last night, Roger was my t’elan. My target. Unfortunately, he’d made you his. Why? I don’t know. Suffice it to say that his soul is where it’s supposed to be.”

“You a-ate him.” A lump lodged in her throat.

“I devoured him and his soul and delivered him to where he belonged. That’s what we do.”

“We? You mean there’s more than one of you?”

“Yes, but I don’t know how many. We’re not a friendly family. We do what we’ve been entrusted to do. Nothing more. Nothing less. If paths cross, it’s a nod, a cordial hello. That’s it.”

“What’s the process? I mean, how’s it all done? Do you get a secret message from God?” Now who sounds insane?

“It’s difficult to explain. An image of the t’elan comes to me, but more importantly, their scent. I can find them without fail.”

“Anywhere in the world?”

“Yes. I’m just...there. This world and the other are different. Time is nonexistent in Gehenna.”

“Where’s that?”

“Where you saw me last night in your dream. It’s the City of the Dead.”

She swallowed hard. That she could believe. “So in the alley, you received an image of Roger and poof, you were there?”

“It’s a little more complicated than that, but yes. I’ve never separated myself from the beast, however. I didn’t know it was even possible, but I think I sensed the danger you were in, and I somehow managed to disconnect my human self from that of the hellhound.”

Just as she opened her mouth, he held up his hand and stopped her. “Please don’t ask how, because I haven’t got an answer. I’m as perplexed about it as you are.
