CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Katie’s Journal

Oh. My. God. These training sessions are getting more intense by the minute. It's like they're trying to break me or something. Maybe they're waiting for some hidden power to burst out of me like I'm in some anime. Fat chance of that happening. All that's bursting out of me is sweat and the occasional curse.

Every time I hit the mat, which was way too often for my liking, there was Pandora with her snarky comments. "Damn, that looked like it hurt from my perspective, so did it?" or "Holy shit, they felt that in California. I'm sure those pussies are all hiding under their desks now with an earthquake alert." My favorite was, "Well, fuck...your dead great-great-grandmother felt that ass-kicking." Thanks, Pandora. Really helpful.

You know what? I'm not backing down. I know I need to push my body to its limits if I want to have a fighting chance against those demons. It's just, sometimes I wonder if I'm cut out for this. Am I really the person they think I am? Can I make a difference? These thoughts keep me up at night, but I can't let anyone see that doubt.

Suggestion: Try starting your entries with something less bland and repetitive. I swear by Lucifer’s left testicle, being trapped inside you is getting more insufferable by the minute.

After training, we dragged our sorry asses up for a late lunch. Calvin was being a drama queen and rubbing his shoulder like he'd gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson. "That was damned intense," he commented. No shit, Sherlock. Armani looked like he was about to pass out, and Derek was whining about his muscles fighting back.

I wanted to tell them all to suck it up, but honestly, I felt the same way. Every part of me ached, and I was pretty sure I'd discovered muscles I never knew existed.

Pushing yourself to the brink of collapse and getting tossed around like a ragdoll? I might have felt a twinge of pride, but it vanished so fast I couldn’t tell. Not that I’d admit it anyway. The meatheads you call teammates were equally pathetic.

Then Calvin suggested we do something as a team tonight. A movie. An action flick with Arnold and some newbies, about heaven and hell. How fitting. I wondered if it would be anything like our reality. Probably not. I doubt Hollywood could capture the sheer terror and absurdity of our lives.

As if watching explosions and scantily clad women would somehow prepare you and your “teammates” for battling the forces of Hell. Idiots.

I agreed to go. Any chance to feel normal, even for a couple of hours, was worth taking. Plus, I figured it might be a good opportunity to bond with the team outside of training. God knows we could use some lighthearted moments.

Bless your naïve little heart. You practically skipped back to your room, babbling on about how excited you were to wear your new clothes. I had to bite my metaphysical tongue to prevent vomiting at your enthusiasm.
