Chapter Ten
That was faster than expected, Keenan thought. He looked at Jackson. âHow do you want us to play it from here?â
âTime to go in,â Jackson said. âStacey, you first. Tell him that Iâm out of the office, and youâre trying to reach me. See what he says to youâit may work for us or against us that youâre a woman. Iâm not being a sexistâbut that man is, Iâm willing to bet.â
âI think itâs a safe bet,â Stacey said. âWe spoke to a staff member who was glad he didnât find her sexually attractive and just treated her like dirt. And with everything that has gone around... I donât believe in skewering anyone without proof, but thereâs so much chatter about himâif any of it is true, and if any of the behavior Iâve witnessed counts, yeahâheâs a sexist.â
âYou okay with this?â Jackson asked her.
She nodded.
âWeâll watch from here, and Iâll send Keenan on in when itâs time.â
Keenan stood next to Jackson and watched as Stacey went on in. She smiled at Colin Smith, taking a chair across from him.
âIâm so sorryâAssistant Director Crow is out of the building. Heâs going to come back as soon as he can.â Her smile deepened, and she said gently, âWe were already aware that you used Billieâs services, or Billie herself, I guess I should say. And others.â
Smith glared at her. âYou donât know the pressure Iâm under. The state of the world!â
âAnd, perhaps, the state of your own home,â she said softly. âI mean, trust me, Iâm a woman. And Iâve seen a lot of women who...well, we call them ballbusters. They get their teeth into a man and then make life miserable for him. And sometimes, you know, a man just needs to feel that heâs in control of himself. He just needs to have a break. Sex that is fun and that is available with no headaches or problems or recriminations.â
âYes, yes, exactly!â Colin Smith said. He eyed her skeptically. âAre you one of those?â he demanded. âIs that why you know the type so well?â
âNo, no... Iâm not even in a relationship, Congressman Smith. Iâve just seen it. My mother completely emasculated my father, and it broke my heart.â
Keenan saw that Jackson was grinning.
âWhat?â
âSheâs a damned good liar. I know her family. Her parents are the bestâstill in loveâand they love her.â
âI didnât kill herâI didnât kill Billie!â Smith said, his voice passionate. âI cared about her!â
âYou were overheard saying that she was a problem and that something needed to be done about her,â Stacey said apologetically.
âYes! I needed her to cool itâweâd been seen publicly.â
âSo, who did you tell that to?â
Smith hesitated. âMy secretary, Agnes. Sheâs been with me for ages.â He hesitated again. âSheâs overpaid and gets all kinds of vacation days. Sheâs a battle-ax herself, but she watches out for me, and I make it up to her.â
âWhat did you want to happen?â
âMoney!â
âPardon?â
âI was going to figure out a way to pay her to be more discreet.
