CHAPTER TEN

ROCCO

RYAH SAT ON THE OPPOSITE side of the Suburban, staring at her phone screen.

Agosto barreled down the road toward the airport. Genn sat beside him, staring out the window at the falling snowflakes.

Normally, Ryah sat next to me. Not today, though. I had a feeling she wasn’t looking forward to our plans.

Leaning my head against the headrest, I stared at her. “Will you continue to ignore me for the entire trip?”

“I haven’t decided.” She never looked up from her screen.

Ouch.

“I have sedatives that will help us relax during the flight.”

“Rocco, a bottle of Jack will work just fine.” She pointed to the trunk.

“Genn, you vetted the flight attendant, correct?”

He peeked over his shoulder. “Yes, Ryah.”

Agosto came to a stop on the tarmac near my family’s new jet.

I hopped out of the truck, nodding at Smitty, who was parked in the SUV behind us. Art escorted Ryah onto the plane.

The bitter cold swept through me as I walked up the steps behind Genn.

A bright smile filled the pilot’s hickory face as he stretched his hand toward me. “Good morning, Mr. Andrisani.”

“Good morning, Simon.”

“The light snow flurries won’t affect our flight.”

“Good to know. I need frequent updates every hour. Also, Genn will be your co-pilot today.”

“That’s not a problem.”

“Thank you.” I walked deeper in to the plane.

Ryah settled into her seat.

Art and Agosto performed their security sweep, opening overhead compartment doors and checking under seats.

The flight attendant stepped out from the galley kitchen and greeted me. “My name is Ronda. It’s a pleasure to serve you and your guests today.” She flashed her pearly white teeth.

“Once in the air, what would you and Ms. Conti like for breakfast?”

Agosto and Art trekked past us into the bedroom area, continuing their sweep.

“Bring two slices of wheat toast with butter and two glasses of ice. At that time, we’ll discuss what we’d like to eat for breakfast.”

Her brown eyes brightened. “Not a problem.”

Agosto strolled toward his seat at the front. Ryah stepped into the aisle, slinking out of her red pea coat in my path. I grabbed her coat, holding her gaze.

“Are you ok?”

She leaned her chin on my chest. “No.”

Her big green eyes were full of worry.

“You know I’ll do everything I can to protect you.”

Ryah reached up and caressed my stubbled cheek. “Yes, Rocco, I know.”

“Babe, have a seat. There’s a blanket in the cabinet above.”

She nodded before slipping into her seat. I threw her coat on the plush chair across the aisle.

“Hey, Rocco?”

I turned to Agosto as I shrugged out of my coat. “Is everything all right?”

“Yeah, I wanted to show you something.” He tapped his phone screen.

Please tell me he didn’t find a bug on this plane.

I tossed my coat on top of Ryah’s.

He turned his screen toward me. “I caught a rare moment of you and Ryah. Thought you might want the picture.”

I held his phone, smiling at the pic. Ryah was so short compared to me. God, she was my life.

“Thanks, Agosto, send that to me, please.”

His heavy hand patted my arm.
