Chapter Six

Connor limped over to the table and picked up the sarong. He tied it around his waist as he had done the towel. A white T-shirt lay folded by the tray where Connor and Jay’s paper cups of coffee stood. A bottle of spring water stood on the tray, still misty with coldness. He took the T-shirt and shook it out. It emitted a cloud of faint perfume. Connor recognized it. Jay was wearing that cologne the day he’d caught the doomed boat to Gili. This must be his. He inspected it. Clean, though. Connor pulled it on. The fit was near perfect. It amused Connor that their bodies were so similar.

He took the lid off the paper cup and drank his coffee. It didn’t matter that it was cold. The taste comforted him. He uncapped the bottle of water and drank some of that, too. Then he went back to the bed with the chain grating along on the tiled floor. He picked up his chinos and boxers, folded them, and put them on the box-like bedside table. Connor put his shoes in the bottom of it. He inspected the table just for something to do. It was actually a white painted, wooden, orange crate.

Connor took the damp towel back to the wet area and draped it over the bamboo shelf. If this is a vacation venue, it sure doesn’t have much in the way of facilities. Not even a towel rail. He wandered back into the main room of the hut and stood in the middle thinking about how he’d welcomed Jay’s sexual advances. Too long without that’s why.

He’d gone over to the table and was leafing through the other National Geographic when the door opened. His first thought was that Jay was back. He spun around. Kiku entered the room and disappointment flooded Connor. It hit him hard knowing how much he’d hoped to see Jay. It shocked and worried him.

Kiku wasn’t alone. A guard followed him into the room with a rifle. Kiku had brought food and after he placed the plate on the table, he gave a Connor a strangely sympathetic look and then left. The guard followed and closed the door of the hut behind him.

Connor dragged the chair out and sat. He gazed at the plate of food for a few moments, before picking up a piece of bacon and using it as a scoop to eat some of the scrambled eggs. Dinner last night had been some kind of fish stew with rice. It was nice to have the kind of breakfast he’d cook himself. There was no knife or fork so he picked up a slice of the fried tomato and popped it in his mouth.
