I knock on the door, ready to have a conversation I should have had weeks ago. I don’t understand why they’ve been so absent, so neglectful, but I need answers. When I told Wyatt of my plans, I didn’t expect my first obstacle to be finding out where they lived. Luckily, Malcolm knew.

“Lottie,” my grandma says, surprised. “Come on in. What are you doing here?”

“Hi,” I say, a tense smile in place. “Is granddad home?”

“Brett!” she shouts as she leads me into the kitchen. Even though we originally didn’t get off on the best footing, she’s been warm and supportive, just like my granddad. Their house, though, is kind of cold, detached. More modern than what I’d expect, but nice.

As she prepares tea, my granddad comes down the stairs, grinning at me. “Hi sweetheart. What are you doing here? And why did you leave that Alpha of yours outside?”

“Caden arrived after I did,” I mutter, not sure how to explain the situation. I stand up and give him a hug as my grandma brings over tea in a teapot with china mugs. This is what I expected when I came here today. Posh tea with biscuits.

“So, what can we do for you?” my grandma asks, sounding a little tense since they’ve asked this more than once.

“Why aren’t you two helping?”

They exchange a look, one singular look that I know allowed them to get their story straight. One singular, shared glance and they can communicate effortlessly.

I miss that.

“Why did you decide to come here today?” my grandma asks. “It’s nearly been a month since the event.”

“Because I held a pack meeting with your pack, and neither of you attended. Because Dad’s struggling, and Malcolm’s barely hanging on. Because the Council are coming in two days, and I have no idea how I’m going to get through that visit. Because I need help, and I don’t know who else to turn to.”

“We’re always going to be your support,” my grandad says, smiling. “Lottie, the reason we’ve took a step back is because the wolves in Golden Eclipse don’t need us. We’re the past, you’re their future. Every parent knows when their input is needed, and sometimes they’re right and sometimes they’re wrong. We’re doing our best for your dad, but by extension, you’re our baby too.”

“And you don’t need coddling. You don’t need us at your back, sweetie. You need your mates,” my grandma says, holding her teacup with her pinkie finger extended out. “Us interfering with Golden Eclipse would only cause you to pull back.”

“And although times are tough, you needed thrown in at the deep end. You’re the heir to this pack, and yes, your mates will be Alphas, but you’re going to be their leader. If you truly needed us, we’d have been there.”

“I need you now,” I say. “The Council are concerned that they’ve not managed to speak to my men.”

“As they should be,” my grandad says. “But that’s not the issue. That’s going to be their reason to get an invite here, but that isn’t why they truly want to come.
