THE OBEAH MAN lived in a whitewashed stone house that had once been servants’ quarters of some kind. It lay hidden behind overgrown trees and debris, in the shadow of a nearby larger structure that was a colonial remnant and looked more like an old fort that had been under attack than a house. Graffiti was spray-painted on the walls, and the windows were broken out and boarded over in some places. Giving the building a quick once-over, Bolan decided that with the crumbling walls around the property and the general state of disrepair, it looked like a haunted house. No doubt the effect was intentional.

There was a driveway, lined with exotic plants and stacks of animal bones topped with bleached-out skulls. The wind shifted slightly, and there was a sudden smell in the air of blood and something rotting. This was a place that had seen a lot of death and terror. Bolan had smelled and felt the same exact thing in places in Africa and the Middle East. He motioned for Kowal to stop, and they knelt in the tall grass.

“Here,” Bolan said, handing over a small shoulder bag. “I know you’ve got the SIG, but just in case, I took the liberty of bringing you some backup hardware.”

Kowal looked inside the bag and grinned. “Aww… And I didn’t get you anything.”

“Remember, I want to keep this quiet and nonlethal if possible,” he said. “Fast and efficient.”

“Got it. Which side do you want me on?”

“You’ll take the front entrance, and I’ll go through the back. According to Ross, there’s not much to this place, so they’ll have to come one way or the other. For now, let’s get a little closer and see what we’ve got.”

“Good enough for me,” the other man said. “I don’t suppose you know what that smell is?”

“Blood and guts,” Bolan said shortly. “It smells the same here as it does everywhere else—bad. God knows what they’re up to in there, so stay sharp.”

“Always do,” Kowal said.

They snuck through the trees and approached the house. The drive was filled with various cars, many of them spray-painted in posse symbols, including a massive black hearse. Bolan signaled for Kowal to follow him as they sidled up to the car parked at the farthest end of the drive. Four sentries were posted along the driveway itself, all of them armed. They didn’t seem to be patrolling, just standing guard, and from the look of it, not paying that much attention.

“Two by two,” Bolan whispered, and Kowal nodded in agreement.

Moving silently, they crept in behind the two closest sentries. Bolan signaled that Kowal should take the one on the far left, and the man slipped away, as the soldier closed in on his own target. Removing a combat knife from his boot, Bolan struck swiftly, wrapping his arm around the man from behind and covering his mouth to stifle his shout of warning, even as he slammed the blade home near the man’s spine, paralyzing him instantly. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Kowal finish off his own target.
