Chapter Ten

Elijah

AS HE pressed the doorbell, he could feel Hawk shifting nervously behind him. Hawk didn’t have anything to fear. He’d already met and survived his real parents so meeting Andrea should be a walk in the park.

The door opened to a smiling Mellie. Elijah didn’t get to say anything before she wrapped her arms around him. He hugged her back, holding on tightly. When he pulled back, Mellie tried to look around him to see Hawk. Elijah turned so he could see them both. Hawk gave Mellie an awkward wave.

“I’m Hawk.”

Mellie frowned at him and turned a questioning look on Elijah who couldn’t help his grin as he signed, “His name is Hawk. He isn’t one.”

The confusion cleared from Mellie’s face and she turned to Hawk to sign, “My name is Mellie. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you,” Hawk said, a relieved smile on his lips.

Mellie disappeared inside and before Hawk could follow, Elijah stopped him and said, “She can’t lipread too well, so if there’s something you don’t know how to say, just ask me or Andrea.”

“I will.”

Elijah gave him a smile and walked first into the house. When they’d taken their shoes off, Andrea appeared in the doorway to the living room. Her hair was up in a messy bun and she had dirt on her cheek.

“I’m so sorry. I was in the garden and I totally forgot the time,” she said.

“It’s fine,” Elijah said and opened his arms to her.

They hugged and after, he noticed she was still wearing garden gloves. She only noticed herself when she held out a hand for Hawk. She shook her head and pulled them off, holding them in her left hand as she shook Hawk’s with the other.

“You’ve got dirt on your face,” Elijah signed to her.

She dropped her head back with what he assumed was a groan. She waved them inside, and they took a seat on the couch while she went to get cleaned up. Elijah leaned against Hawk who wrapped an arm around him and pulled him closer. When Andrea came back, she arched a brow at Elijah and said, “Not your boyfriend, huh?”

Elijah felt heat spread in his cheeks and turned his gaze down. Hawk pulled back, making him glance up.

“Something you wanna share?” Hawk asked.

Elijah shrugged, then shook his head. Of course, Andrea took it upon herself to explain it to Hawk. Elijah watched Hawk the whole time.

“Wait. So you guys thought we were together before we were?” Hawk asked, looking from Elijah to Andrea.

When Andrea nodded, Hawk blurted out, “But I wasn’t even—”

Elijah arched a brow at him. “Wasn’t what?”

Hawk scratched his head and hesitated before saying, “I didn’t know I had feelings for you then.”

“But it was the same day we—” Elijah snapped his mouth shut before he said something he’d regret saying in front of Andrea.

“I meant that I didn’t realize it,” Hawk said. “Not until later.”

Elijah didn’t really know what to say to that, but Mellie saved him from saying anything as she walked into the room carrying glasses and a pitcher of sweet tea.
