Chapter 16
âIs this it?â Lisa pointed to the screen of her laptop.
Charlie leaned in to take a better look. There it was. The turtle and hare logo she had seen in her dream. âYeah, that's it,â Charlie said.
âHare's Swifty Mart and Gas,â Lisa scoffed. âI guess this guy didnât really understand the tortoise and hare fable.â
Charlie chuckled and wrote down the address. âI guess not. It's way out near the causeway leading to Talmadge Island.â
âI don't think you should go out there. Especially not by yourself. You could just pass this info on to your little deputy friend, right? Let him check it out.â
Charlie rolled her eyes. âYeah, like he'd take me seriously now. I'm going to have to gather some sort of evidence before he listens to me.â
âSo you don't think giving him the message from his father made him a believer?â
âNo.â Charlie shook her head. âNot by a long shot. I think it freaked him out, but it certainly didn't change his mind.â
âWell you tried.â Lisa shrugged. âI still don't want you going out there by yourself.â
âAre you volunteering?â
âMaybe. What time are you thinking of going?â
âIn my dream, it was night. And the digital clock read 11:39. I figure he must be a third-shift worker.â
Lisa sighed and frowned. âSorry, Iâve got a meeting at seven-thirty in the morning.â
âDonât worry about it. Iâll be fine. Itâs a public place, right?â Charlie's phone began to ring with Scott's ring tone. âHang on. I have to take this.â
âWhat the hell is going on with you?â Scott barked in her ear before she could even say hello.
âWell, good afternoon to you too,â Charlie quipped.
âI just had a cop in my office asking me questions about you. Said you had gone to him with some crazy dream.â
âDid he?â Charlie directed her gaze to Lisa. She held the phone away from her mouth. âLooks like Deputy dogged is being nosy again. Evidently he just questioned Scott about me.â
âWho are you talking to?â Scott snapped.
âLisa,â Charlie said. âI'm sorry he bothered you, Scott. This really isn't about the information I gave him from my dream, though. He's just convinced that I'm going to take advantage of his mother.â
âAbusing his power is more like it,â Lisa grumbled under her breath.
âWhat did you tell him?â Charlie asked.
âHe thinks youâre unstable. He asked me if you could actually see ghosts.â
âI bet you just loved that, didnât you?â Charlie chuckled. âWhat did you tell him?â
âI told him I don't know what you see. So you're not acting as some sort of psychic consultant?â
âNo,â Charlie said. âLike I said, he is hell-bent on proving Iâm some sort of con artist.â
âOh.â Scott grew quiet and his silence nagged at her.
âScottâdid he tell you I was a consultant?â
âHe may have implied it. He had questions about you.â
âWhat questions?â Charlie pinched the bridge of her nose. âWhat did you tell him?â
âHe wanted to know if I believed in your special abilities.â Scott sounded bitter. âHe knew about your time at MUSC, by the way.
