The spirit of George Leger still keeps a close watch on activities at his hotel. Wendy Williams.

Canty contacted Bay Area Paranormal Investigators to evaluate the strange happenings. Group members were accompanied by a medium, and the team leader, Mark Boccuzzi, said they use “cold, hard science” to evaluate paranormal events. Data was gathered by thousands of dollars’ worth of sensitive recorders and infrared cameras. A tri-field meter was used to measure electromagnetic frequencies, while thermometers checked cold spots and compasses determined accurate locations. The medium said she was overwhelmed by a number of impressions, commenting, “So many spirits have memories of this hotel. Imagine 150 years of passion and intrigue.” She detected the presence of several drunken men in the courthouse jail and said she could hear them worrying about their fates. She was certain that George Leger often observed the daily hotel activities from his post in the lobby, saying, “He’s still keeping an eye on his hotel.”

This medium had vivid impressions of the “Gray Lady,” whom she described as a timid woman in her thirties, wearing a Victorian dress with lacey cuffs and a frilly apron. A high column of energy was detected on a tri-field meter near this Gray Lady apparition. After the spirit faded away, the EMF meter did not detect any energy. One psychic encountered the apparition of another woman dressed in a long white gown and said this could be the mistress of George Leger.

A group of paranormal investigators from Sacramento spent the night at the hotel and interviewed employees, longtime patrons and guests about their ghostly encounters. This group obtained numerous elevated EMF readings throughout the building. The EVP meter readings were high, and they made recordings of unusual sounds using digital audio equipment and a sound enhancer. These investigators captured orbs on their video cameras and were able to get some digital photos.

The basement of the courthouse annex has been a gloomy place with its old jail cells, barred windows and view of the ancient hanging tree. Some psychics felt the presence of a young boy and said he might have been involved in a tragic event here. A longtime hotel customer once described the air in the basement as “heavy” and said, “I felt a fluttering in my chest.” Digital photos taken of her in the basement showed the woman surrounded by orbs, with some even on her clothes and chest.
