And, with that in his mind, after the phone call with Saffron ended, Harper contemplated a map on his phone, wondering just what path the dog would take because Saffron was exactly right. She knew animals in a different way than his experience, but generally dogs knew how to find water and how to get from point A to B, much better and easier than any human. Sometimes they weren’t that easy to track because of it.

He didn’t have a starting point, outside of Milly’s place, and Harper had found no tracks, even though he had looked really hard. He’d looked both that night and the next morning, when he was a little bit more clearheaded. Still, he hadn’t come up with anything. Not that it was necessarily to be expected, as the dog was several if not ten days out by now. Given that much time, Beauty could have traveled a long distance to get to where she was trying to go. At least that was one theory, considering that Harper didn’t have any proof that the dog was even still alive.

Now, according to Milly, Beauty had also looked injured, but how much of that was her missing leg? She’d had a prosthetic at one time, but he didn’t know if that had gone missing during her travels or what. Sometimes animals didn’t like prosthetics and would do much better without one. That could have been Beauty’s case too. Harper had absolutely nothing more to go on, and, with the training center already having lied to him and others, no way could Harper believe them about anything.

He didn’t trust them, especially knowing that the son had already lied about Beauty. It just made things a little more difficult than Harper would have liked to begin with. What was evident was his shooter had hunted down Harper, must have been in his vehicle at the time of the drive-by shooting. That tactic was a quick in, shoot somebody, quick out and drive away job, but still Harper had a hard time believing that nobody saw the shooter in the act. He was still taking an awful risk, but Harper wasn’t so sure that any risk was something this shooter really cared about, which meant that the gunman was looking at a bigger payout for doing this, than not doing it.

Everybody was caught up in their own motivations, and this shooter was getting something for his trouble. Or avoiding something he didn’t want.

Was that a warning shot or a miss? And what if it wasn’t even intended for Harper? So the million-dollar question was, who was that bullet really intended for? That was always a problem for him because, if he wasn’t the intended target, who was that person, and was that person now dead? Had a second attempt been made on their life? The whole thing was a pain in the ass.

“More like a pain in the back actually,” he muttered to himself, with a wry smile, as he checked behind him, looking for his tail.
