Jenny’s mouth was warm, soft, fragile. Like a delicate butterfly’s wing brushing against Tristan’s lips. He suspected if he applied the slightest pressure she’d fly away. Even though he longed to deepen their kiss, he stood still, keeping his hands to his sides and ordering himself to be content with her lips touching his.

In the moonlight, he could see her closed eyes, could see the uncertainty on her face, could feel her body quiver. Or was that his body? He wasn’t sure. He just knew that kissing Jenny wasn’t going to make the ache inside him go away, but rather intensify his reaction every time she was near.

He hadn’t thought it would. Not really. But it had been worth a shot when she’d been so adamant that they couldn’t be together. He should be the one being adamant. Instead, he was shaking like a teenaged boy receiving his first kiss.

His gaze never leaving her, he watched the play of emotions the moonlight lit across her face. He’d never expected Jenny to take his suggestion seriously. That she had had blown him away. That her mouth pressed against his blew him away.

It took all his willpower to let her pull back, knowing that she might never allow him this close again, that he might never breathe her breath or feel the warmth of her body again, but he managed, somehow. If only there was more light so he could read everything her now-open eyes revealed as she stared at him. Awe, wonder, curiosity, regret? He couldn’t be sure, he just knew emotions were high.

Afraid he’d say the wrong thing if he opened his mouth, he waited so he could take his cue from her. But she didn’t say anything, just seemed to be registering what she’d done.

Please don’t regret this, he mentally ordered. Please give us a chance.

A chance for what? he wondered. He didn’t allow that curiosity to take hold, just lived in the moment, prepared for Jenny to push him away when what he wanted was to hold her tight. Just when he thought she was going to retreat, she pressed her lips to his again, this time with more pressure, more exploration, and as much as he didn’t want to crush her fragility, he kissed her back.

Still, the kiss was more sweet than passionate. More tasting, exploring, than consuming, but it wouldn’t take much for him to fully ignite and go up in flames. Her touch was that powerful, he was that receptive to what was happening.

A bit breathy, she pulled back and stared up at him, her eyes full of wonder and concern. “That just brought things to a whole new level of awkward.”

“Bad?” he asked, willing her to admit that it hadn’t been, that she’d felt the magic of their complicated touch.

She shook her head.

Hope blossomed. “Good?”

After a moment’s hesitation, she sighed. “You already know you’re a great kisser. To even suggest that our kissing would make this...whatever this is between us...go away was ludicrous.
