CHAPTER TEN

Daisy felt…strange leaving Zach’s little ghost town. Like she’d miss it. Which was crazy since she’d been cooped up in that odd little house, not out enjoying the blue sky or mountains in the distance or in this very early morning’s case, the stars out in their full and utter splendor.

Nothing had been good here, and yet she didn’t want to leave. Didn’t want to face Nashville or the people she knew, even with Zach at her side.

Because facing meant accepting that someone she loved and trusted might be behind this.

But she didn’t argue. She’d packed her bags like Zach had said. She’d enjoyed maybe thirty seconds of looking up at the vast universe before Zach had whisked her into his car and started the drive.

He’d said nothing about the kisses, but for a few moments he’d relaxed under her.

She smiled a little to herself. Well, not all of him had relaxed.

She gave him a sideways glance. He was driving to some tiny independent airport in some other part of middle of nowhere Wyoming, where they’d fly in some tiny little plane to a few airports all the way to Nashville.

Nashville. It wasn’t home, because she didn’t particularly feel like she had a home. She’d been touring since she could remember, only ever staying with Mom and Vaughn for bits of time. As an adult she’d bought a house in Nashville, but she’d sold it when she’d married Jordan.

Then they’d sold the house they’d bought together. The house she’d thought she’d start a family in, have a life in.

“You know, I don’t have a place in Nashville,” she said after a while.

“I do.”

“You have a place in Nashville?” she asked incredulously. She’d believed he knew enough people to take a small plane halfway across the country, but this seemed far-fetched. And yet, she trusted him implicitly, regardless of what seemed believable.

“I know people, Daisy. I found us a safe place to stay.”

She kept staring at him, because something about the split lip and the bruising on his face—even with the dark five-o’clock shadow over it, made her feel safe even when she knew she wasn’t.

But Zach would protect her, no matter the circumstances. Even though she knew Zach was human and that anyone could reach her if they wanted to badly enough, someone would fight to keep her safe.

Take blows. Give blows. For her.

He could push her away or insist they didn’t have time for more than a kiss, but one thing Daisy knew was that Zach wasn’t stoic or unaffected. He was worried about getting emotionally invested because he was already on his way to getting emotionally invested.

The thought cheered her enough that she dozed off, until Zack was waking her up with her real name again.

“Sleepy you doesn’t seem to answer to the name Daisy,” he offered, his voice rough with exhaustion and yet his lips curved.

“That’s because Daisy Delaney doesn’t sleep.”

“All right, Lucy Cooper. You should really talk to that alter ego of yours, because you could both use some sleep.
