Chapter 11

Back at home, I transformed the side table in the dining room into Marcel’s personal hat gallery, each cap artfully displayed for his whimsical choosing. It was a delightful sight, ready for Marcel’s spontaneous fashion decisions. Then we settled into the comforting embrace of the couch, Marcel nestling in snugly beside me. As he leaned against me, a contented sigh escaped him, and he drifted into a peaceful slumber. It was a cozy, heartwarming scene—just a person and their dog, wrapped in the simple joy of each other’s company.

It was safe to admit this part of owning a pet was wonderful, and I completely understood the appeal.

As I flipped through the book’s pages, my eyes danced over exotic recipes, igniting a flurry of inspiration. Each turn of the page sparked new ideas for unique blends, from the bounty of my own garden. My excitement crescendoed with every discovery, propelling me deeper into the culinary adventure laid out before me. A wave of gratitude for my grandma washed over me, her suggestion, ulterior motives and all, striking me as pure genius. I wished I could plant a grateful kiss on her cheek, marvelling at how such an obvious solution had eluded me until now.

A solid hour went by with Marcel’s gentle snores, and my thorough reading slowly ended. My mind wandered as I constantly replayed the conversation with Maddie in my head. I had been eager to discover who Piper’s enemies were so that I could ask them some questions.

My fingers drummed a restless rhythm on the armrest as I schemed. The challenge? Covertly probing the coven members, extracting secrets without casting a shadow of suspicion. Regret gnawed at me for not pressing Maddie further when I had the chance. As a pivotal figure in the coven, her insights could be crucial. Maddie wasn’t just any witch; she was the coven’s linchpin, the nurturing force guiding fledgling witches. Her depth of knowledge, extending beyond mere magical prowess, was potentially invaluable. Piper’s adversaries weren’t confined to the witching world. But Maddie’s mentorship role positioned her at the center of a web of information. I pondered over her potential to unlock doors I hadn’t even considered knocking on.

The coven’s bond, thick as sisters, sparked a curiosity within me: what would life be like wrapped in the warm embrace of witchhood? The idea of having a circle of confidantes, a sisterhood forged in magic and mystery, was tantalizing. My grandmother often reminisced about the deep friendships she’d cultivated within the coven, her stories tinged with a sense of longing. Her passing left a void; the coven’s visits ceased. After all, to them, I was the uninitiated, the one who fumbled with her powers, more a liability than a comrade. Their distance, perhaps, was as much about self-preservation as it was about my lack of practice. The thought lingered, bitter and sweet: was I cursed? Or just untapped potential, waiting for the right moment to bloom?

Leaning my head back on the couch, I sighed
