The Rock of True Faith

Where I live in southern California, we are constantly reminded of the need for a good foundation on a house. It seems as if we either have earthquakes or floods every year. Some years we had both at once. It was six o’clock in the morning, and a level 6.8 earthquake hit—that’s a whopper. The doors started banging, the kids were flying out of bed, and the radio newscaster reported that the dam above our house had broken and everybody had to evacuate. By God’s providence, the only thing we lost was a shelf full of my athletic trophies. We went into the den and they were in a pile on the floor, the symbols of my long-ago gridiron glory, smashed to bits. (My wife used the opportunity to remind me that God blesses those who are humble. It’s her favorite earthquake story.)

The climate in southern California is almost identical to the climate of Israel, and the people there are likewise no strangers to floods and the need for a sturdy foundation. It’s dry and arid, for the most part, then when it rains, the land can absorb only so much, and the water becomes a flood. What may look like a wonderful, solid place to build a house in the summer becomes a raging torrent in winter that wipes out anything constructed there.

Jesus has this image in mind at the very end of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 7:24–27:
