Lenny drives. Hugh sits in the passenger seat and yawns.

He’s getting bored with this routine. Every night, to Los Tierras Bajas. They got a night’s reprieve last night, after what happened at Titty City, but that’s not the worst thing. Sometimes expecting something, and then it not coming, can be worse. It’ll have the residents on edge. Hugh’s men will just have to be extra effective tonight. A total smash run. A fucking blitzkrieg.

In fact, Hugh thinks it’s time to start ramping things up. It’s getting tedious. “We need to get these motherfuckers out, Lenny,” he says. “Enough is enough.” He’s thinking of last night again. The strip club. The dressing-down Cameron gave him after. The longer this takes, the less patience his brother is showing him.

Lenny grunts.

Hugh sits up. “We’re gonna have to get serious with them. Real fucking serious. Busting heads and smashing up property isn’t enough. We’re gonna have to start breaking bones.”

“Cameron said not to take things too far,” Lenny says. “He said there’s only so much he can get the cops to turn a blind eye to.”

Hugh remembers. It was back when Cameron told him to stop making certain residents disappear. It would raise too many questions. If the law got wind of it, they’d have to ask about it.

“I know what he said. But we’ve gotta do something. We keep going on like this, we’re gonna be a dog that’s all bark, no bite. And you know what? I think these fuckers left behind, I think they know that. They’re not scared of us. Nowhere near as scared as they should be. We could be doing this for months more – fucking years, maybe.” Hugh sits up straight. He clicks his fingers. He’s had an idea.

Out the corner of his eye, Lenny has noticed. “What are you thinking?”

“We burn them out,” Hugh says.

Lenny turns his head, but keeps one eye no the road,

“We smoke these fuckers out,” Hugh says. “Burn down these houses that are so precious to them.”

“Will Cameron be all right with that? It’s the ground under them he’s interested in. Could fire harm what he’s after?”

Hugh shrugs. “How should I know? I mean, I think those minerals are supposed to be pretty deep, right?” Hugh considers. “I guess I should probably run it past him…just to be sure…”

“So, no fire tonight?”

“Not tonight. But we’re still gonna ramp things up.” He looks into the mirror, at the headlights of the vehicles following them to Los Tierras Bajas. “I’m getting tired, Lenny. I wanna move on from this shit. Every damn night. It’s getting too much. I’m bored of it. It was never supposed to take this long.”

Lenny nods.

“We smash them tonight. We smash their houses, and we smash them. I don’t care what we break. I don’t care if we give them broken bones and concussions, that clear? We’re getting them out. I want them gone. And if Cameron wants to complain about it, he can. Whatever. But then it’ll be done, and long-term he’ll thank me.
