The ’96 Ford F-150 skids to a stop in the dirt and rocks in front of the motel.

Becky Rant flies from the truck, heading toward her room. There’s not much there to pick up. Most things are already packed in an identical black bag that was in the BMW trunk. If she were thinking better, she’d have the bags be different. She guesses it doesn’t matter. She shoves the scattered clothes into the black bag, covering her gun, the rubber band-bound stacks of cash, and her other odds and ends with the clothes she wore yesterday. The pills, along with the airplane bottles of Dewar’s and the condoms, are pushed to the edges of the bag, poking out the sides, making it look like a boa constrictor that’s swallowed a small family of mice. Thankfully, there are only a few things in the bathroom that need to be packed up.

Every move has a purpose.

Every breath has meaning.

Zipping up the bag, she rushes out from the room. She tosses the bag into the floorboard of the truck then snatches up the microfiber cloths. Wipes down the door handles, the faucets in the sink, the toilet flusher, the TV remote, the TV—

“Don’t need to do that,” Hank says.

Becky Rant wipes away the sweat from her forehead with her arm.

“What? Why?”

“Like the truck.”

“Do you?”

“I do.” He motions to the door. “We need to go. Now.”

Her eyes widen as she watches Hank pick up a container full of what smells like gasoline. He begins pouring it, making sure to spread it evenly around the bed, floor and walls. She steps out from the door, moves near the truck. There’s a crackling sound. A whiff of smoke. A flicker of light coming from the house on the hill.

Hank’s house is in the early stages of evolving into a full-on bonfire.
