Cross sucking

This usually manifests as a calf sucking on the navel of another calf, although they can use other parts of the body such as the stifle or ear (Figure 5.17). This can lead to hair loss, and in some cases can induce navel ill or skin infections. It is also very common to see non-nutritive sucking in calves fed on low rations of milk (32), and this, along with vocalisation, are indicators that calves are hungry (33). To address this problem in bucket rearing systems, provision of dry teats for the calf to suck on, attached to the wall of the pen can help, although they should be regularly cleaned to reduce the risk of them acting as a fomite for spread of disease.
