The painting by mid-century artist Ernest Springer in our dining room is a conversation starter. The old printers’ trays on the wall to the right are full of nature finds we’ve collected on walks in the woods. Above the printers’ trays I nailed sheets of beautiful bark we found in our wanderings.

Personally, I have a thing for portraits of men, mostly old men. I cannot pass up an affordable, well-done painting of a timeworn face with an interesting expression. I didn’t realize that I was “collecting” these paintings until I looked around a few years ago and saw just how many we had. Now, whenever we’re out antiquing and David sees one, he calls out, “I found another old man!” We continue to collect these anonymous portraits because they’re intriguing to us and they make us smile. Friends often ask us about them—especially about the one in our dining room of a younger man with pigeons—and we have fun making up stories. We’re not serious art aficionados, but we buy what we love and what makes us happy, which is the best advice I can offer to anyone uncertain about buying art. Our portrait collection is odd and a definite quirk in our house, but it’s also part of what makes it unique and makes it “us.”
