It wasn’t late at night but Ryker had to kick at Sheriff Nolan’s door for some time before the fat lawman opened up to him. His chubby face preceded by the barrel of a scattergun.

Ryker felt like death, the arm swollen and unbearably tender to the touch, with the nagging pain that wore him down like a bad toothache. His head felt like a team of mules had been dancing on it, where he’d been knocked out twice from behind. The blood had dried on his cheek where Seamus had cut him.

Nolan peered out through the crack in the chained door, straining to recognize the figure outside in the darkness.

‘Jack?’

‘It’s not Santa Claus, Frank.’

‘Jesus! I heard the Brennans got you. I was comin’ out first thing in the morning.’

‘I just left them. You goin’ to keep me out here all night? I could surely …’

He felt weak, his head swimming. For a moment he thought he was going to fall and leaned against the frame of the door for support, while Nolan rattled the chain clear of the heavy latch.

‘I’m comin’, Jack. What they done to you? You look like hell.’

‘Feel like it. Don’t touch my arm, Frank. It’s broke bad.’

‘Come on in. I’ll send for the Doc.’

‘Yeah. And tell Goldburgh something for me.’

‘What?’

‘Tell him … tell him he’s got a deal.’

Then a great drift of white snow appeared under Ryker’s feet and he toppled painlessly into it.
