Hearthfire - Bonus Christmas novella
Chapter 1
Luna
âYou look cute with that hat on.â Cole said, his amber eyes crinkled at the corners with his flirty smile.
I nudged him with my hip, and he put his spanner down in the mass of engine parts and cables. His oil-stained fingers shifted the dangling tip of my Santaâs hat from in front of my eye, allowing him to give me a quick kiss, and a spark circled in my chest.
âYouâre not so bad yourself.â I hooked some tinsel around his neck, drawing him in for a longer kiss, running my own dirty hands along his arms, bare in the tank top he wore, showing off his muscled stomach and shoulders.
Touching him sent a tingle up my thighs and forced all my blood to travel south. I wanted him NOW. On the hood. His slick body gliding against mine, while his hands kneaded and stroked and I lost myself in his touch. Just like last night. Fucking me nice and slow.
In between classes and training at the Guild, I hung out with Cole in the tech dungeon where he assembled gadgets, equipment and technology for the Guild of Shadows. We spent the last few weeks under and on top of the hood of his latest invention: an engine for an armored vehicle for the Guild. We bartered smooches for tools and I spent hours pretending to do more than perv on him.
We didnât get to enjoy the kiss for very long when a shriek like hundreds of demons screaming at once cut through the workshop. I jerked back. Cole pulled away. And the simultaneous thunk of skull against metal had us rubbing the tops of our head.
I scanned the room, my eyes flicking from the weapons storage, Coleâs workbench, the testing rooms, the computers and shelves. Nothing.
âOuch,â I said, as we extricated ourselves to check on the disturbance.
Blaze, my trainer and recent lover, swaggered into the room, wearing his usual air of authority like a cloak. âPrince Charmingâ adequately described him. Straw-colored hair, piercing blue eyes that reminded me of a tropical sea, and lips as kiss-worthy as hell.
Behind him strode Talon, one the Guildâs sentries. Dark, proud, strong and rocking the body of a superhero, he was cursed every night to turn into a gargoyle.
A bony, winged creature resembling a little demon dangled from his stony grasp. Smoke curled off the creatureâs legs, and it growled and writhed to get free, but Talon refused it its freedom.
Gargoyle stone was toxic to supernatural creatures. No wonder the critterâs skin burned, and it protested with a series of pained howls.
Brimstone, my cute little owl-goyle, who had been snoozing on the tool trolley, fluttered protectively onto my shoulder. It pecked at my arm and squawked as if to say let me at the monster.
Guild gargoylesâ primary function involved protecting their charges, but Brimstone went above and beyondâ¦serious case of clinginess and separation anxiety. I stroked its wing to soothe the owl-goyle.
Cole put his spanner down on his tray and fist-bumped Talonâs rocky fist.
