Brunch was brutal. Not the food—that was actually good. Colton made southwest omelets and pancakes, while speaking in a weird accent he said represents his New Mexican heritage. Emily reminded him that they’re from Delaware and the only relative they have in New Mexico is an uncle they haven’t seen in ten years, but that didn’t sway him.

The brutal part is from not being able to talk to Quinn in private. She was on the phone when Colt and I got back and didn’t hang up until it was time to eat. I think Emily suspects something, though. Every time I looked across the table, she was staring at me with a weird look on her face. Even more weird? She cornered me in the kitchen to invite me to the beach. I politely declined for two reasons—I’m not discussing anything until I talk to Quinn, and I have a therapy appointment in five minutes.

“I’ve gotta run down to my truck to take care of some Army stuff,” I say to whoever is listening. It’s not entirely a lie.

Once I’m settled in my truck, I lock the door and pull out my phone. I’m not surprised when it rings at eleven on the dot.

“Hey, Paul,” I say once my therapist’s face fills the screen.

“Hi, Tanner. Good to see you. Kind of.” He smiles at his joke, and I force one back.

“Thanks for agreeing to switch to video calls while I’m traveling.”

“No problem. I’m glad you found a job. How’s that going?”

My gaze lifts to the windshield, and I have to remind myself it’s his job to pry. More importantly, I have to play the game. My disability rating will be reviewed later this year and if I don’t participate in appointments, that rating—and the monthly paycheck that goes with it—can drop.

“It’s complicated,” I say finally. “It’s going… I don’t know. It’s going.”

His expression hasn’t changed when I look back at the screen. Yeah, didn’t think he’d accept that answer.

“Complicated by what factors?” he asks when I don’t continue.

I draw in a deep breath, bracing myself for battle. I learned early on it does no good to avoid his questions. He’s un-distractable. Is that a word? Whatever. The dude is obstinate.

“Complicated by the fact that last night I got punched in the face in an altercation with three strangers, had another nightmare which makes two in a row for the first time in months, and had a sexual encounter with my boss who is also my roommate.”

There. Made him crack in record time today.

“Wow, that was quite a night.”

“Yeah,” I huff out. “Welcome to tour life. And now we’re stuck sharing a room for the rest of it too.”

“Stuck? Interesting word choice. Does that mean you don’t want to share a room with her?”

Stuck… am I stuck?

“No. I mean, yes. I do want to. But I don’t because… fuck.” I clench my eyes shut and massage my forehead with my free hand. “Quinn is technically my boss,” I explain, focusing back on the screen.
