It was unlikely Amelia would stay awake through a dry history lesson, so it was Gabrielâs idea to take her out to see Zavinia. Lady Nancy was hesitant, so Gabriel brought out his most persuasive arguments.
âNo one here knows who she isâor who I am, for that matter. We wonât be recognized. Besides, sheâll rule over Zavinia one day; she should be familiar with the people here. And sheâll be able to practice her French.â
Amelia hid a yawn behind her hand, and Lady Nancy gave her a sharp look.
âAnd itâll help us stay awake,â he added blandly.
Finally she relented. They would be able to transform to protect themselves if it came to that. Heâd thought they were safe in America, where no one was supposed to know who they were or where. He would have to be vigilant. He wasnât going to allow the woman he loved to be put in danger a second time.
For their outing, Amelia abandoned her formalwear and dressed in a dark blue sundress dotted with white flowers. The color made her hair seem redder, a burnished auburn that looked almost copper when the sun hit it just right, and her eyes as blue as the sky. His dragon gave a growl at the sight.
Sheâs the most perfect treasure ever, his dragon informed him, so you better not fuck everything up.
Never, Gabriel thought, his heart skipping a beat.
The sweetheart neckline dipped in the middle, just baring the tops of her breasts to Gabrielâs sight. It was nothing inappropriate in itself, but it made Gabrielâs cock twitch in his pants. He wanted to touch her again. They only made love the night before, but as wonderful and perfect as it had been, it hadnât satisfied his need for her at all. If anything, he needed her now more than ever.
âGabriel?â Ameliaâs fingers snapped in front of his face.
Abruptly he realized heâd been daydreaming. She was waiting for him to answer . . . something. What?
âI didnât hear you,â he said as smoothly as he could manage.
The corners of her mouth turned up in a smirk. âYeah, I got that. Are you ready to go?â
âIâm ready.â
She threw him a brilliant smile over her shoulder, which he returned. She shrugged on a white lacy cardigan that technically covered everything up but made him think of lingerie. It didnât help that the garment left tantalizing glimpses of her skin underneath for his eyes to linger on.
Town was a good thirty minutesâ drive away. They didnât use a driverâthat would have attracted unwanted attentionâso Gabriel drove himself in one of the plainer cars, and it offered the opportunity to relax for a little while and pretend they were normal. Just two ordinary lovers spending a beautiful afternoon with each other, no politics or complications in sight.
The fog they had seen that morning was gone, the sky was clear and cloudless, and the sun warmed the countryside. The local town did not boast a huge population, but all the basic necessities were here.
