FAKE PASSPORT

After I pulled out of Kayla, I went to the bathroom to get a towel and clean her up. I washed between her thighs, thinking of how good it felt to be with her.

She was mostly asleep at this point. She was calmer than she had been since she had witnessed the assassination. We had been shot at enough for me to know that she was still in danger. If she were a normal client, she would have had several shifts of my men come through. However, my instincts told me to keep her close.

My logical brain told me not to get attached to Kayla. She’d move on as soon as she felt safe and didn’t need me anymore. She fought me on small things like going to work. I didn’t know if we had a future together.

I cleaned up, then I threw on some clothes and opened up my computer. Brittany had already forwarded what Detective Luke had sent to her, not caring about the consequences. Kyle Shirling was the tech pro I’d talk to about finding Sean. If you touched a computer, chances were that Kyle Shirling could find you. I gave Kyle the police report and the two sketches of the man who might be named Sean.

Within less than 15 minutes, my phone buzzed with a call. Kyle was on the line.

“Hello?”

“I found a fake passport that showed a picture of a man similar to the mugshot that the FBI database has for Sean.”

“And?”

“He’s supposed to be aboard a plane flight to Europe.” Kyle gave me more details, but I had an overwhelming sense of both relief and guilt. If Kayla didn’t have a reason to stay, she’d go.

I wondered if I had to tell her. I liked her living in my house. However, I had no right to keep Kayla afraid and deny her the information that she needed. I sighed. Sometimes, doing what your conscience told you was right was a serious pain in the rear.
