I reached Dylan at the same time Aubrey did. I needed to get her away from him so I could explain what the call I’d just been on with Sergeant Miller was about. It pissed me off, and I knew it would make Aubrey feel worse than I already knew she was feeling. I’d been in her shoes not that long ago, and I relived that day over and over again in my head daily. She handled herself a lot better than I had, and the fact I couldn’t get my shit together long enough to go stand with her was more reason that I didn’t deserve her. Her strength was astounding.

“What’s going on?” Dylan asked.

I hesitated for a moment. I looked at her and saw that she was wearing Dylan’s jacket. A twinge of jealousy flowed through me, and I had to remind myself that Dylan would be the better man for her.

I shook my head. “Nothing. We just have to get going, that’s all.”

Dylan nodded and started to walk away, but Aubrey remained planted where she was.

“You’re lying,” she said, once again calling me out on my shit. “I can see it in your eyes.”

I studied her. “You’re right.”

“You can say it, Dean,” Aubrey said softly. “Whatever it is, you can tell me. There’s nothing you could say that will make this day any worse than it already is.”

Damn, was she perceptive. I didn’t think I could bury my emotions down in front of her even if I tried. And I had been trying.

“Holden?” Dylan’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I cleared my throat.

“Okay. Someone broke into your apartment, and we think it was Ray. It doesn’t look like anything was stolen, but your apartment was trashed,” I explained.

“Oh no,” Aubrey gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.

“Thankfully no one was home, but there was something left behind,” I growled. She shouldn’t have to see this, but we needed to know what this meant, if it meant anything to her.

“What is it?” Aubrey asked. I looked at Dylan, and he knew from the look on my face how bad it was.

“We don’t have to do this right now,” I told her, hoping that she would wait. I wasn’t ready to show her this, and I didn’t think she was either.

“Yes, we do.” Aubrey inhaled sharply and moved to stand next to me. Her arm brushed up against mine, and her scent of roses and peaches hit my nose. “Show me.”

Reluctantly, I pulled up the message on my phone and showed the picture to her. I didn’t want to look at it again, so I studied her face. Her brows furrowed as she reached up and zoomed in on the photo of lingerie covered in blood. All of a sudden, her nose scrunched up, and she pushed the phone away.

“I’ve seen enough,” she murmured, grabbing onto my arm to steady herself. I handed it to Dylan, and he cursed under his breath. “Those are mine. It was the bra and panty set Ray gave me on our six-month anniversary.
