âHi, Sweet Pea,â I say to Syd to get her attention away from the television. âCan you turn off the TV so we can talk?â
âI like my show,â she complains.
âJust for a few minutes. Then you can keep watching or you can help me make dinner tonight?â I say, giving her options.
âYou can cook. Does that mean you feel better?â she asks.
âIâm feeling a lot better. I saw the doctor today and he told me Iâm doing good,â I say to Syd, and I wrap an arm around her. She cuddles into my side and that fierce need to protect her overwhelms me. âHow was your day with Mommy?â
âNot good,â she says.
âIâm sorry,â I reply.
âWas there something you didnât like?â I ask.
âI donât like to be with Mommy. I know I am supposed to love my mommy because that is what it says in books, and in school mommies come to pick up their kids from school and my friends love their mommy, but I donât love my mommy. I donât know my mommy,â she says, and it makes my heart hurt.
âYou havenât been around Mommy very much. Mommy loves you in her own way, but sometimes she can be. . .â Iâm at a loss for words.
âWhy does Mommy want me now? I donât want her. I donât like being with her,â Syd insists.
âI think Mommy misses you and she wants to spend time with you, but sometimes she has a hard time explaining her feelings. That is why itâs good to talk about feelings because it helps us understand ourselves even better,â I explain, but by the look on my daughterâs face I can tell I lost her. I donât know how to explain to my daughter that her momâs behavior has nothing to do with her and everything to do with the fact she is a spoiled brat.
âDaddy?â Syd says.
âYes, Sweet Pea.â
âMommyâs friend, Warren, isnât a nice man. He was touching Ellie and she got angry,â Syd shares.
âWhat?â I ask in shock.
âEllie wasnât happy with him,â Syd repeats.
Iâm seeing red. Ellie didnât say anything about that when she told me about her day.
âWas he okay with you, Sweet Pea?â I ask.
She nods. âHe didnât really talk to me. I was by Ellieâs side all day. I held her hand and stayed close to her, but when I went to see the animals at the zoo Warren was talking to her and Ellie got angry.â
âOkay. Why donât you give me a few minutes. I need to check on Ellie. Then we can make dinner together.â
âDaddy, I donât want to go with Mommy tomorrow. I want to go to school,â my daughter says.
âYouâre going to school tomorrow. I donât want you to worry,â I assure her, and I kiss the top of her head.
I head straight for Ellieâs room because my daughter isnât the only one I am feeling protective about. Iâm seeing red right now.
I knock once. No answer. I knock again. No answer.
Fuck it.
I walk inside the room and I see the bathroom door open.
