CHAPTER 15 - MINERVA

When I wake up in the morning, my head is throbbing and foggy. I feel as though I’m waking up inside a cloud. I never should have had as much to drink as I did last night. It was reckless, and I was overreacting, but the true depth of how reckless it was doesn’t hit me until I look over next to me and see Cal sleeping beside me in the bed.

To make matters even more horrifying, I don’t seem to be wearing anything more than a bra and panties.

I sit bolt upright in bed, which was probably not the best idea considering the way my vision starts to have those tiny twinkling stars all around the edges of it. I rub my temple with my thumb and forefinger and close my eyes for a moment to stop the vertigo.

“You okay?” Cal’s voice asks from beside me.

“Define okay,” I say in a small, hungover groan as I open my eyes again, this time taking things more slowly. I can feel panic clawing at me. Not only have I woken up in bed with a man after some drunken escapade that seems to have cost me my clothes, but it just so happens that the man is Cal. I’ve been trying my damnedest to distance myself from him and not fall further into his orbit. But it seems that no matter what I do, I keep getting pulled back in.

“Please tell me that we didn’t—I mean—why don’t I have any clothes on?” I stumble over my words awkwardly as I look over at him and see that he is still fully dressed at least.

“You were thrashing around all night,” he says as he sits up next to me. “You got yourself all twisted around in your clothes and blankets, then you were half asleep yelling about how hot the temperature in the room was. So, you took off your shirt and pants and flung them over there.”

I look over toward the corner of the hotel room he’s pointing toward, and I’m relieved to see that his story checks out. Crumpled in a wad in the corner of the room are my shirt and pants.

But just to be extra sure, I ask for further confirmation.

“So, you and I… we didn’t… do anything, right?”

“If you’re asking if we had sex, Minnie, then the answer to that is no. But you really should be more careful about knowing your alcohol limit. You were so out of it last night that anyone could have done anything to you. That’s why I stayed.”

“Although I appreciate that you stayed to keep a watch over me, is there any particular reason why you had to climb into bed beside me and couldn’t sleep on the floor?”

I feel a little bit like the ungrateful princess he first made me out to be, but then again, this is Cal we’re talking about. He pretty much had the entire cheerleading squad in his bed at one point.
