Leigh

“Leigh, this is the last time I'm going to tell you this. If we don't hear from you about talking to adoption agencies, we're going to start talking to our lawyers about cutting you from the trust fund. I have no idea how to explain to you how important it is that we portray ourselves as a honorable family worthy of being included in Rosebridge’s highest circles. That's the best way we know to ensure success in life. So if you're not going to get with the program, then you can't access your money.”

I sighed and stopped the voicemail from playing. I had no idea how I was going to talk my way out of this one. I supposed I had to log onto my computer and send an email to an adoption agency. There was no way they were going to accept me, but I was sure my mom had thought of that already. She’d probably somehow strong-arm the adoption agency and get them to give me a child. Which was honestly pretty messed up, but… My mom went to great lengths to get what she wanted.

I searched for adoption agencies nearby online, and found one which I could send an inquiry to. I sent them a quick email, expressing my interest, feeling completely sleazy for doing so. I was totally wasting their time, as well as mine.

Maybe, I thought, I could explain to the adoption agency what was going on, and give them some sort of reasoning I could tell my mother so that she wouldn't bother me anymore. I couldn't imagine her friends were going to judge me that much for not getting a child as soon as I got married.

But then, my mother had so much anxiety over how she was perceived in her social circle that she wasn't thinking rationally. That was why she'd made me marry Gavin, even though I’d known him for less than a month. It was more likely that her friends would judge me for getting married so quickly to, quite frankly, a random guy.

I lucked out because Gavin was actually a good person. But it could've turned out a lot worse for me, and I didn't think my parents would have cared.

I called my mother back because I wanted to tell her that I sent the email to the adoption agency as soon as possible.

“Hello? Leigh, honey! How are you?” She sounded oddly cheerful, which was unnerving.

“Fine, Mom. I'm just calling to let you know that I got your voicemail and I talked to an adoption agency. I've sent in my inquiry, and I'm waiting to hear back from them.”

“That's wonderful!” she exclaimed. I’d never heard her so enthusiastic about something before in my life. I wondered if maybe she really just wanted grandchildren, and she was using the trust fund to strong-arm me into getting them.

“Yeah, but I'm not sure they'll let me adopt a child. I mean, I wouldn't exactly consider my situation stable. And Gavin and I haven't even talked about it,” I said, trying to warn her that it wouldn’t work out.
