CHAPTER 12

Despair crashed into Draven as he glided toward Gritheria. Even before he saw Helios’s flaming border in the distance, he could sense that something was terribly wrong. Tension exploded through the air like sparks, causing Draven’s pelt to stand on end.

When he flew higher to rise above a sloping hill, that’s when Draven saw the flames. That’s when he inhaled the rancid, lung-scorching smoke. That’s when he realized that Helios had already claimed Gritheria. “No,” Draven shakily breathed, feeling his heart shatter. “No, no, no!”

Draven’s dread was so powerful that he nearly lost his balance and plummeted.

What am I going to do? he asked himself. Is Sora trapped in there? Is Arianna with her? Is it… is it too late to stop Helios? Draven exploded forward, refusing to believe it. It’s not too late until the very end. Zara said that I must have hope, or else Gritheria will be done for. The least I can do now is believe her. Besides, it’s not like I have many other options left. Draven lifted up his talon to gaze at the gem Zara gave him. Except for this, I guess. But I still have no idea how a gem is going to stop Helios.

Draven didn’t have much time to think about it. He had reached the border of fire.

The dark brown griffin cautiously flew beside it with wary eyes. This wall is huge, he thought in astonishment. I don’t think I can go above it, even if I tried. Not even the strongest griffin can fly that high! Draven put on a burst of speed. I wonder if it covers all of Gritheria’s border, or ends in some places…

As he continued to fly, he felt a prickle at the back of his neck. Draven’s ear tufts perked up. He abruptly whirled around, then was almost knocked out of the sky. A greyish-brown griffin had collided into him at full force. The newcomer let out a screech as he rounded on Draven. He skillfully threw Draven off balance with his one remaining talon, causing him to plummet.

Draven let out a gasp when he saw the ground rapidly rising up to meet him. A fall from this height could be serious. Draven desperately tried to balance himself, but it was useless. The wind was too powerful to fight against.

A flash of white exploded from the cover of the trees. Yet another griffin knocked into him, this time helping Draven to become upright. At the last moment, Draven lifted into the sky, just barely avoiding slamming into the ground. Before he had a chance to recover, the other griffin threw herself at him. “I can’t believe it!” Sora happily exclaimed, giving him a massive hug. “Draven! It’s you! I’m so happy to see you again!”

Draven’s thrilled smile mirrored her own. “I’m so happy to see you, too,” he replied, holding her talons as they both hovered in the air. “When I saw the flaming border, I thought that you were trapped inside Gritheria.
